New Delhi: The Government of India today outlawed all images of smoking in Bollywood films made after October 2 and television shows in a move praised by campaigners as a "sensible step" but attacked by film-makers as a curb on artistic freedom. However, the ban would not be applicable on films related to a historical era or personality. "We have reached a complete understanding about the manner in which we should go about," Information and Broadcasting Minister Jaipal Reddy said after meeting Health Minister A Ramadoss. Earlier, the Health Ministry had issued a directive about the ban, which was to affect movies in the making also. Leaders of Producer associations who are up in arms over the Government's decision are likely to protest against it. The ban, the most comprehensive of its kind in the world, will outlaw shots showing cigarette packs and advertising hoardings. The Ministry of Health, in its directive had said that films predating the ban with offending scenes would need to a run a series of health warnings across the bottom of the screen.
