Yasin Malik suffers stroke

Islamabad: Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Mohammad Yasin Malik suffered a stroke last evening following which the doctors advised him rest. JKLF sources said that Malik (37) suffered the stroke after attending a lunch hosted by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Islamabad. Malik is one of the nine moderate Kashmiri leaders currently visiting Pakistan. They added that the doctors have advised Malik to take complete rest and not to meet visitors. According to the Dawn, the doctor who attended Malik blamed the illness on fatigue due to hectic engagements since the Kashmiri leaders arrived in PoK on June 2. Mohammad Rafiq Dar, secretary-general of Malik's JKLF faction in PoK and Pakistan, said his leader had cancelled a trip to Kotli town in PoK and was unsure whether he would be able to go on Wednesday to Muzaffarabad as planned.

Pakistan move to dump Gilani, promote Mirwaiz: Report (Go To Top)

Islamabad: Pakistan has decided to recognise the moderate face of the APHC (All Party Hurriyat Conference) led by Miwaiz Omar Farooq as the real face of the Conference, and dub the extremist leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani as a "veteran Kashmiri leader". This is being seen as a major change in Pakistan government's attitude towards Gilani as till recently Islamabad recognised Gilani as the real face of APHC. According to the Online News, the federal government has directed its state-run media to dub Gilani as the "veteran Kashmiri leader" and not as the APHC chairman. The move comes after Gilani declined Pakistan government's invitation to visit PoK and Pakistan along with other Kashmiri leaders currently visiting Pakistan. His absence in the Kashmiri leaders' delegation brought quite an embarrassment for the federal government in front of its own population. Following the directions from the federal government, the media has started calling Gilani as a veteran Kashmiri leader rather than the APHC chairman. A report said that this was the beginning of the change in Kashmiri leadership, and that a formal announcement in this regard will be made on the return of visiting Kashmiri leadership to Srinagar. President Pervez Musharraf reportedly expressed dismay over the attitude of Kashmiri leader Gilani. In an interview after his meeting with the visiting Kashmiri leaders, he also gave indication that a change in the leadership of APHC was in the offing. He said that the visiting Kashmiri leaders were the real Kashmiri leadership, and this was a clear indication that Pakistan has decided to recognise Abbas Ansari's group of APHC was the real Conference.

Osama alive, living on Pak-Afghan border: Musharraf (Go To Top)

Canberra: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has once again admitted that al Qaeda chief and the world's most wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden was alive and most probably living in the mountaineous border areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan. "I know that he is alive. Most likely he is alive, yes, because of our information and interrogation of various al-Qaeda operatives that we have apprehended. Maybe he is in the border region in hiding wherever he sees a vacuum........it is not easy to get a person there," The News quoted Musharraf as saying. In the past too, Musharraf has on several occasions admitted of Osama's presence in areas bordering Afghanistan where the Pashtuns and al Qaeda activists guard him. There is so much pressure on Musharraf in keeping Osama out of the US' reach that he has so far refused to permit the US forces to comb the area to capture the al Qaeda chief.

Nehru, Gokhale, Tilak blamed (Go To Top)

Islamabad: The vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League, Syed Kabir Ali Wasti has said that communal anti- Muslim policies of Hindu leaders like Nehru, Gokhale and Tilak was the reason behind Mohammed Ali Jinnah's demand for a separate state of Pakistan. He said that Jinnah, the founder of Paksitan, was a secular, progressive, liberal and democratic statesman, who believed in an United India, initially, and anti-Muslim policies of these leaders had forced him to demand and work for the creation of Pakistan. He said that Jinnah had created Pakistan for giving socio- economic rights to the oppressed people, adding that both the clergy in Pakistan and the extremists in India had wrongly painted Jinnah. He said that Jinnah wanted to make Pakistan into a progressive, liberal and welfare state, which had nothing to with theocracy. Jinnah, he said, was himself against theocracy and had in his historic August 11, 1947 speech, said that he wanted to see Pakistan as a secular state where all the citizens would be free to preach and practice their religions He said that Jinnah had always portrayed himself as a political leader, a nationalist, who was a preacher of peace and Hindu- Muslim unity initially, adding that once when his supporters had referred to him as a Maulana in a public rally in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, Jinnah had said that he was not a religious leader of the Muslims.
