Liz Hurley caught in the battle of the bulge
(Go To Top)

London: Hollywood beauty Elizabeth Hurley has irked women critics by her remarks that only slim women should wear tight clothes. The actress, who recently launched her own line of beachwear, commented when asked about what fashion she would ban. "Anything that is too small or too tight, unless you're slim and toned. I'm sick of seeing flab bulging out all over," Liz was quoted by the Mirror, as saying. "Bare legs in a mini-skirt can look dodgy at any age," she added. Bingo hall assistant Alison Baker, 33, said: "I'm a size 14 and I like wearing tight-fitting cropped tops. "Does that mean Liz Hurley will ban me from wearing them?"

If you can' get a date, just blame your genes (Go To Top)

London: If you fail to charm women and have difficulty in getting a date, blame your genes. Researchers studied fruit flies, which share certain genes similar to human beings. Manipulation of a single gene in male fruit flies made them less adept at courting female mates, a US and an Austrian team found. The research, published in the journals Nature and Cell, suggested sexual behaviour has a strong biological basis. Professor Barbara Taylor and colleagues at Oregon State University in the US and Dr Barry Dickson and colleagues at the Austrian Academy of Sciences looked at the 'fruitless' gene, which is present in both male and female fruit flies. Ordinarily, it is only in males that this gene results in the creation of proteins that guide male sexual behaviour patterns, such as approaching females, tapping and singing to them and performing courtship dances. When the researchers manipulated the male fruit flies so that they had a faulty fruitless gene the flies no longer showed typical male sex-related behaviours "In a physical sense, the females looked perfectly normal, but they acted like males and, if they were physically able to, I would not be surprised if they would have attempted to mate other females," BBC quoted Professor Taylor, as saying. "Research of this type is telling us quite a bit about they ways in which things we believe are developmental actually have a biological and genetic underpinning," she added. However, experts acknowledge that it is always difficult to apply findings from one species to another.

Jolie fuels Pitt romance rumours  (Go To Top)

London: Rumours of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt having an affair on the sets of Mr and Mrs Smith might after all be true, with her revealing that she develops deep ties with her co-actors while filming. "I have always developed deep ties with actors who have played alongside me. I always fall in love," The Sun quoted her as saying. Angelina and Brad practised shooting together for their roles as killers, and she says that it is natural that trust and understanding normally develops between costars in trying conditions. "If you're armed you need to trust that person. We developed a good understanding," she was quoted as saying.

Asprin benefits reiterated by experts (Go To Top)

London: Experts have reiterated the numerous health benefits of daily dozes of aspirin for people over 50, but feel that individuals should be well educated in its properties, to be able to make their own decisions. Peter Elwood and colleagues at Cardiff University believe that the evidence now supports more widespread use of aspirin, and there needs to be a strategy to inform the public and enable older people to make their own decision. As a general rule, daily aspirin is given only to people whose five year risk of a vascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke, is 3 percent or more. The authors show that, by age 50, 80 percent of men and 50 percnet of women reach this level of risk and they suggest that 90-95 percent of the population could take low dose aspirin without problems. Evidence is also growing that regular aspirin may reduce cancer and dementia. "The possibility that a simple, daily, inexpensive low dose pill would achieve a reduction in vascular events, and might achieve reductions in cancer and dementia without the need for screening, deserves serious consideration," they write. "Although we judge that aspirin should be taken from around 50 years, we insist that the general public should be well informed and the final decision should lie with each person," they added.

'Metrosexuals' are passe, 'Mirls' are in (Go To Top)

Melbourne: Metrosexuals might have created waves in a world where the macho image of men still rules, but now taking the baton are a new breed of ultra-feminine straight men called "mirls" or male girls. According to The Herald Sun, the "hermaphrodudes" as they are called, are not afraid to carry a manbag, wear feminine jewellery, spend a fortune on fashion or work in traditionally female jobs. They also wear pink scarfs and work in women's fashion and lingerie shops. But when it comes to romance they remain committed to pursuing the opposite sex. And in order to cater to the growing need of 'mirls', female fashion chain Sportsgirl has released a line of "boy jewellery" specifically for guys that includes wood and bead necklaces, bracelets, leather chokers and wrist straps. "Girls would buy them for their boyfriends or a guy might come in with his girlfriend and see them and take an interest. Guys are definitely taking much more care in the way they look and it's not considered bad to be wearing bracelets," Sportsgirl spokeswoman Prue Murphy was quoted as saying.
