18 killed, 20 hurt in Himachal bus mishap

     Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh): At least 18 persons were killed and 20 injured, when a private bus fell into a gorge late on Monday night, police said. The ill-fated bus, which was travelling from Vadodara, carrying employees of a firm, was on its way to Manali. It fell into the Charankhud gorge en route, police said. The bus with 38 passengers met with an accident at 12.15 a.m. The injured have been admitted to the zonal hospital and the condition of three is stated to be critical. The dead include 13 adult males and five women. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

Purushottam Express derails, 18 injured  (Go To Top)

     Gamariah (Jharkhand): At least 18 people injured, six of them seriously, when Puri-bound Purushottam Express from New Delhi collided with a stationary train engine here late on Monday. The accident occurred when the train came on the same track on which the engine was stationary between Birajpur and Gamariah rail stations under Chakradharpur division. "There are around 20 people who are injured including an assistant driver. However, there is no casualty," said M.N. Ojha, senior commercial officer, railways, Chakradharpur district. Injured have been rushed to the Tata hospital and the Railway hospital. The SLR coach, second from the engine, which carries luggage besides passengers, derailed under the impact of the collision. A general compartment which was immediately after the SLR coach was also damaged. "I was sitting and suddenly I felt a jolt and I thought that the train will turn upside down. But the train stopped and when we came out we saw that a boggie was derailed and the passengers were stuck inside the boggie," said Sonu, a passenger. The Northern Railways in Delhi have issued the helpline numbers for information regarding the accident. According to the officials enquiry would be ordered to ascertain how the engine came on the track of the express train.

More bodies recovered from coal mine (Go To Top)

     Hazaribagh: Naval divers today recovered four more bodies of trapped coal miners from an inundated old coal mine of Central Coalfield Limited. Deputy Commissioner of Hazaribagh Rahul Purwar said that only one body out of four could has been identified , senior overman Sambhum Bhuiyan, who led the team to the mine, has been identified. With this, the total number of bodies of miners recovered has gone up to six. On Monday, two bodies had been recovered by the rescue team. Purwar said that with the deployment of six high-powered pumps the water-level of Bansgara mine in Sayal area of CCL was fast receding in the mine and trace of other eight bodies could be made by tomorrow. 14 miners were trapped when the mine was flooded following a roof collapse on June 15.

Left wins Kolkata Corporation poll after five years (Go To Top)

     Kolkata: The CPM-led Left Front on Tuesday wrested power from Trinamool Congress (TC) in the 141-ward Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) after five years and retained the Bidhannagar municipality. The Left Front won 74 wards, three wards more than the required absolute majority in the prestigious city civic body with results of 140 wards declared till this afternoon. Till the filing of this report, the CPM had bagged 59 seats, while other Front partners - Revolutionary Socialist Party secured six, Forward Bloc and CPI four each. LF-backed RJD bagged one ward. On the other hand, the Trinamool Congress-BJP combine, which controlled the KMC board since 2000, bagged 45 seats, with TC bagging 42 wards and BJP three. Of the UDA constituents, Congress secured 15 wards and candidates of Paschimbanga Unnyan Congress Mancha, floated by dissident TC leader and Mayor Subrata Mukherjee, who himself emerged victorious, won five seats. One Independent supported by Congress won in a ward.

Akash testfired for a third time (Go To Top)

     Chandipur-On-Sea (Orissa): India successfully testfired its medium-range surface-to-air missile 'Akash' for the third time this week on Tuesday from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 km from Balasore, Orissa. The missile, considered to be one of the major milestones of the country's integrated guided missile development programme, was testfired at 1 p.m. Akash was earlier successfully testfired from the ITR on June 17 and 20. Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists and the ITR officials witnessed the test fire. The missile, with a range of 25 km, has an advanced booster and ramjet propulsion with multiple target handling capability.
