Former Gujarat Governor Sunder Singh Bhandari dead (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Former Gujarat Governor and senior BJP leader Sunder Singh Bhandari passed away in his sleep here this morning. He was 84. A founder member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ailing Bhandari was a bachelor and occupied key positions in the BJP. During the tenure of BJP-led NDA government, Bhandari was the Governor of both Bihar and Gujarat. BJP Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, General Secretary Sanjay Joshi and senior leaders, including Pyarelal Khandelwal, were among those who visited Bhandari's Kalkaji Extension residence in South Delhi soon after hearing the news. Bhandari had recently hit the headlines when he charged the Narendra Modi government with delay in responding to the post- Godhra violence in Gujarat and demanded a thorough investigation to find the guilty. Later, however, he gave a clean chit to Modi but stuck to his demand for a probe. A member of BJP National Council, Bhandari had not been taking active interest in party affairs of late. The funeral of Bhandari will take place on Thursday morning at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi. The body will be brought to party headquarters this evening and will be kept there overnight to allow party leaders and others to pay their last respect. BJP President L K Advani, who was to go to Jammu today, has cancelled his visit in the wake of Bhandari's death. Advani, along with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, will pay their respects to the departed soul at the party headquarters, party sources said.

Pakistan won't play ball on Siachen (Go To Top)

Lahore: Pakistan military's mouthpiece Inter- Services Public Relations (ISPR) has refuted a statement issued by New Delhi that India and Pakistan have carved out a roadmap for withdrawing troops from Siachen and making it a "mountain of peace". A section of both Indian and Pakistani media had yesterday carried reports saying that both the countries have agreed to make Siachen into a "mountain of peace" and that India would station its forces at the pre-1984 position. The idea had first come from Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh while on a visit to the highest battlefield of the world. Refuting the news reports, ISPR chief Major General Shaukat Sultan also denied any progress on the issue. The Daily Times quoted Sultan as saying in an interview with a TV channel that Pakistan had not received any formal proposal by the Indian government regarding a troop withdrawal from Siachen. He even rejected Indian Army chief General J.J. Singh's statement that both countries had not made any progress in the dialogue held to resolve the issue. During a meeting with his Singapore counterpart Major General Desmond Kuek in New Delhi, General Singh had said that the Indian Army had given a roadmap to the Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government for converting the Siachen Glacier, the world's highest and most hostile battlefield, into a mountain of peace and that "we have given our viewpoint on converting the Saltoro ridge and the glacier into a de-militarised zone.

Sensex breaks record, closes at all-time high of 7145 (Go To Top)

Mumbai: Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensex today rose to an all-time closing high after its fourth straight session of gains, boosted by foreign funds buying select front- line stocks. The 30-share index rose by 1 percent to 7,145.34 points, the highest close in the history of Asia's oldest stock exchange. The index has gained more than 8 percent so far this year. Though the stock index has been rising, the market breadth was negative for the third straight day as 1,368 shares declined against gains for only 847 stocks. The 50-issue National Stock Exchange index firmed 0.8 percent to 2,187.35 points, also an all-time high. Analysts attributed the settlement of the reliance dispute and the onset of monsoons for the rally. "Today the market continued its bull run, the Nifty went on to its all time high and specifically Reliance also touched its all time high today. So, I think most of these, the bull runs that we have been witnessing for the past two to three days has been contributed by, one the monsoons have come so it was a bit of a cheer for the markets, secondly the Reliance dispute got over which was a very positive sign for the markets and thirdly we have witnessed a lot of FII (foreign institutional investor) buying since the last five to six days. Consequently there have been heavy buyers to the tune of almost a 1000 crores", said Ankit Ajmera, director, Ajcon Global services Ltd. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries Ltd. rose 1.5 percent to 655.50 rupees, recovering from the day's low of 640.50 rupees, as investors expect a re-rating as the company demerges from other parts of the group.
