Sex sells, but not for Shane Warne (Go To Top)

Melbourne: Aussie Spin wizard Shane Warne, who hogged the limelight in the wake of the post-tsunami aid work is now likely to have his ratings bite the dust, following his recent sex scandal with an English student. The recent survey carried out by the market research company Sweeney Sports has said that Warne has always had a varying public perception, and his latest scandal will adversely affect his suitability to endorse products. The survey was based on phone interviews of 1000 people between October and March, where they were asked to rate 72 athletes on their sponsorship worth. It said that while his ratings took a battering in 2000-01 following the text messaging sex scandal, it dropped down further in 2003-04 after he was suspended from cricket for 12 months for taking banned substance. From 11 in 2000, his rating dropped down to 50 in 2003-04, reports The Australian. But post tsunami aid work helped it climb up to 27 from 50, the report said, adding that his latest scandal will adversely affect his ability to change public perception as well as suitability to endorse products. "Media coverage is so omnipresent for athletes these days, their lives on and off the field are very intertwined, so negative publicity does weigh heavily and can affect their long-term commercial value," the paper quoted Martin Hirons, director of Sweeney Sports as saying. "I wouldn't want Shane Warne to sponsor anything I was associated with. He's not as bad as Mike Tyson, but he has a long way to go to come back," the paper quoted chairman of Grey Advertising, Paul Gardner, as saying.

"There's also a nasty bit about insider trading thrown into the mix to assure that Martha: The Unauthorized Musical is a tale of Shakespearean proportions with a strong second act. "Though the tone of the show is decidedly light, the underlying theme of the show is 'the price of perfection' that Martha imposes on herself."

It's official, docs do believe in God (Go To Top)

Washington: If you thought that doctors are the most non-religious persons upon this earth, you'll be surprised to know that a majority of them do believe in God. According to a recent survey by researchers at the University of Chicago, 76 percent of doctors believe in God and 59 percent believe in some sort of afterlife. The survey published in the latest issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, found that 90 percent of doctors in the United States attend religious services at least occasionally, compared to 81 percent of all adults. Fifty-five percent of doctors say their religious beliefs influence how they practice medicine. "We did not think physicians were nearly this religious. We suspect that people who combine an aptitude for science with an interest in religion and an affinity for public service are particularly attracted to medicine. The responsibility to care for those who are suffering, and the rewards of helping those in need, resonate throughout most religious traditions," said study author Dr. Farr Curlin. Although physicians are nearly as religious as the general population, their specific beliefs often differ from those of their patients. While more than 80 percent of patients describe themselves as Protestant or Catholic, only 60 percent of physicians come from either group. Physicians are 26 times more likely to be Hindu than the overall US population. They are seven times more likely to be Jewish, six times more likely to be Buddhist and five times more likely to be Muslim.

The study found that although doctors are more likely than the general population to attend religious services, they are less willing to "apply their religious beliefs to other areas of life. Sixty-one percent of doctors say they try to make sense of a difficult situation and decide what to do without relying on God, versus only 29 percent of the general population. Doctors in family practice and pediatrics were far more likely to carry their religious belief into "all my other dealings" and to look to God for "support and guidance." Psychiatrists and radiologists were the least likely. Christian, Mormon and Buddhist doctors were the most likely to say "my religious beliefs influence my practice of medicine." Jewish and Hindu physicians were the least likely. Physicians from the South and Midwest were slightly more religious than those from the East and West.
