Rebel LJP ex-MLAs set to joint JD (U) on July 7

New Delhi: Twenty one of the twenty nine ex-MLAs of Union Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan led Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) today announced that they would formally join JD (U) on July 7 in Patna. The former MLAs had broken ranks with Paswan to support the formation of a government under Nitish Kumar but the Centre dissolved the state assembly before the things could materialise in their favour. Expelled state LJP President Narendra Singh, accompanied by 4 ex- MLAs, today told reporters that the joining ceremony would be held in presence of senior party leaders. "There is no question of joining any other party as the 21 rebel LJP MLAs had sworn in an affidavit that they would join JD(U)," he said. He further said that his group of 21 LJP leaders included Rama Singh, Sheel Kumar Rai, Shankar Singh and Dhumal Singh who are currently lodged in different jails. MLAs who joioned Singh during today's press conference were Janak Singh, Rameshwar Paswan, Anil Kumar and Krishan Mohan Choudhary. Making fun of Paswan's "recent love for muslims and his persistant efforts to foist a muslim chief minister in Bihar," he remarked "Why is he (Paswan) not talking about unconditional release of incarcerated former Iraqi President Saddam Hussain who is being ill treated by the Americans in jail." Singh also demanded the recall of State Governor Buta Singh for his controversial decision of dissolving the assembly without talking to political parties.

Sonia announces compensation for Tonk firing victims (Go To Top)

Tonk (Rajasthan): Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has announced Rs two lakh compensation to the relatives of those killed and Rs 10,000 for those injured in the recent police firing on agitating farmers in Rajasthan's Tonk district. She termed the firing as "barbaric" and offered condolences to the bereaved families. Earlier, She visited Bavari village and talked to people there. "They (the farmers) were very sad," she said outside Sahadat hospital and assured all possible help to them. Gandhi arrived in the areas in a chopper from Jaipur and drove directly to the house of Prakash and spent some time with his family. She then left for Jhirana to meet families of three others who had been killed on June 13. The Congress president will also visit Sohella to meet the mother of a woman killed in the firing, besides the Tonk District Hospital to meet the injured persons. Five persons, including a woman, were killed in Sohella village in Tonk district when police fired on agitating farmers demanding adequate water for crops. According to Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Nawdeep Singh, hundreds of villagers turned up at the Bavari helipad to catch a glimpse of the Congress leader. Meanwhile, the police arrested three BJP MLAs -- Kalicharan Saraf, Biru Singh Rathore and Ramlal Sharma -- and dozens of other party activists near Sanganer Airport, who raised a hue and cry over Sonia's visit to the area as well as to the Centre's decision to hike fuel price.

Indian call centre doles out Brit bank secrets (Go To Top)

London: The call centre business in India could head from boom to bust if allegations regarding call centre employees doling out confidential data and indulging in fraudulent business are anything to go by. In the latest case, officials have said that call centre employees in India are selling confidential details of British bank account holders and their passport and credit card numbers. The allegations arose following a 'sting operation' by an undercover reporter of The Sun, who claimed to have obtained details of 1000 accounts, passports and credit cards from a middleman in New Delhi. The banks involved were NatWest and Barclays, the report added, although Barclay said that no personal customer data was held in India. The report said that the middleman also boasted of being able to provide details of as many as 200,000 bank accounts in a month, which, he further said, came from more than one call centre. The issue has, as expected snowballed into a major controversy, with the British police saying that it would investigate into the allegations. Experts also believe that with the busting of a racket in Pune in April, involving call centre employees, who stole 200,000 pounds from the accounts of New York based customers, call centres in India are likely to face repercussions in the banking industry. Officials have however said that although "offshoring" carried risks, there was no evidence to suggest that the danger was greater than in British call centres. "Our advice is never respond to unsolicited calls regarding your account security details," The Telegraph quoted a City of London, policeman as saying.
