Shahjehan's descendants claim Taj Mahal (Go To Top)

Lucknow: Descendants of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan have staked a claim to the ownership rights of Taj Mahal, one of the eight wonders of the world, and presently a huge money- spinner for the Government of Uttar Pradesh because of the influx of tourists both from within the country and abroad. The Taj today already has three additional claimants -- the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which has run the Taj since the late 19th century, the Sunni Wakf (Trust) Board which is demanding that the monument of love be given the seven percent takings from at least 20,000 people who visit each day and a right-wing Hindu group. The ASI has asked the Central government to let it keep the 350- year-old monument. Foreigners pay Rs.750 (17.20 dollars) as entry fee to the Taj, while Indians pay Rs.20. Prince Yakub Habeebuddin, the great grandson of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor says the family has documents to prove that the ownership of the Taj belongs to them. "We are demanding that the Wakf board should hand over the Taj Mahal to us and not the Wakf property. Only the Mughal family has a right over it, neither the Wakf board, nor the administration because as per the Wakf Act,the family of Shahjahan is the original recipient of the custody of the monument," Prince Habeebuddin told reporters in Lucknow on Thursday.

The Wakf Board, which governs properties belonging to Muslim religious institutions, has said that Shahjahan, who built the monument for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, had bequeathed it to the trust's predecessor. But Habeebuddin says according to documentary proof, the property belonged to the family. Like other state Sunni Waqfs, the Uttar Pradesh state body was granted ownership of Sunni graves in the state and also claims the Taj Mahal as a grave under its care. And, it insists, the emperor and his wife were Sunnis. But some leaders also say the mausoleum was built under supervision of an Iranian Shia architect and that Shahjahan was in fact a Shia. So the Shia Waqf should own it. The hardline Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), allied to the Bharatiya Janata Party has said the gleaming white structure, flanked by two mosques, is not even Muslim. Looking after a wonder of the world built in the middle of the 17th century is not easy -- the ASI employs 105 maintenance staff, 50 gardeners, 30 workers at an anti-pollution centre and 180 guards. None of those claiming the Taj want to look after it, leaving maintenance instead to the ASI. Historians say Shahjahan consulted experts from the Middle East and Europe as he planned the tomb, which took 20,000 people more than 22 years to build. Rows over monuments and sacred sites are common in India, which has seen the ebb and flow of invasions for centuries and has variously been ruled by Buddhists, Muslims, Christians and Hindus. In 1992, a mob led by the VHP and other Hindu activists razed a 16th century mosque in the northern city of Ayodhya, which they said had been built on the birthplace of the god-king Ram. Thousands died in the religious riots that followed in some of India's worst communal bloodshed.
