Rashid's application to travel to Srinagar rejected

New Delhi: The Indian Government on Friday rejected Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Sheikh Rashid's application to travel to Srinagar on June 30 via the Muzaffarabad-Srinagar bus route, citing incidents incompatible with the request. In a statement issued to the media, an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said: "The Information Minister of Pakistan Sheikh Rashid Ahmed had applied to travel on the bus from Muzaffarabad to Srinagar. The Government of India has processed the application and declined to accord permission taking into account all relevant matters." New Delhi on Thursday confirmed that it had received the application of Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed to travel to the Indian side of Kashmir by the June 30 Muzaffarbad-Srinagar bus. An External Affairs Ministry spokesman said then that the application is being processed. "We have received the application which will be processed in due course." Ahmed had submitted his application form with the deputy commissioner of Muzaffarabad for issuance of a travel permit to visit the Indian side of Kashmir on June 9. Official sources in Pakistan said that one of Rashid's representative filled and filed the form at the Muzaffarabad counter, established to receive such applications from ordinary passengers, desiring to go to the Indian side of Kashmir. Rashid had plans to travel to Srinagar by the Muzaffarabad- Srinagar bus on June 30 to meet his relatives and friends and pay homage at the graveside of his ancestors, who hail from the Indian side of Kashmir.

Surya Bahadur Thapa arrives in India (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Nepal's former Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa who arrived here today on an unofficial visit, will be meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran. Surya Bahadur Thapa, who has served five times as the Prime Minister of Nepal, under three different kings, in a political career lasting nearly 50 years, said his visit to India is for a health check up. While ostensibly he is here for a routine health check up, Surya Bahadur Thapa is expected to meet top Indian leaders to discuss the current internal situation in Nepal. Nepal's CPN-UML leader Bamdeb Gautum is also in New Delhi since few days. Talking to the reporters at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Thapa said," Democracy has been distorted during last few months in Nepal and it should be restored according to the constitution as soon as possible." He was last appointed as the Prime Minister of Nepal by King Gyanendra on June 4, 2003. Later, he resigned on May 7, 2004, when popular discontent forced the King to announce the formation of a new Government. Thapa left office on June 2, 2004 when Deuba took charge from him.

Srinagar: At least three soldiers were killed and 25 injured in a car bomb blast here today. Officials said the blast occurred when the soldiers, on vacation, were returning with their families after sight seeing at the Nishat Bagh. The bus suffered nearly 60 per cent of the damage and was thrown several metres away due to the impact of the explosion. "There was an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in the bus which was carrying army personnel returning from leave. This happened at around 3.30 in the afternoon. Some of the army personnel have been injured and were rescued and are receiving treatment at the local hospital. I do not know how many casualties are there," said Sanjeev Ranjan Ahuja, Deputy Inspector General of Central Reserve Police Force. No militant outfit has, so far, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Terrorist camps running in Kashmir: Minister (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Shri Prakash Jaiswal today said that there was information that a few training camps for terrorists were being run in remote areas of Kashmir despite the ongoing peace process with arch-rival Pakistan. "We are keeping an eye on from which side the militants can enter and from where training is being imparted to them. We have got information that in few remote areas near Poonch, there are some training camps going on. We have ordered that combing should begin and we are hopeful that we will be able to nab those who are running those camps," Jaiswal said in an interview in New Delhi. Jaiswal also said that the Amarnath Yatra will commence from July 6 this year. "This time there has been a heavy snowfall on the route. And I myself have seen that. So how can you expect that the snow would have melted by June 21? If the pilgrims take that route now, it can be dangerous for them. So we will start the pilgrimage by July 6 this year and they can register for that," he said. Thousands of Hindu devotees from all over the country take the pilgrimage from Pahalgam to the Amarnath cave shrine amid heavy security. The pilgrimage from Baltal, which is less steep and shorter than the traditional route has already begun.
