CPI (M) plans protests against fuel price hike

Kolkata: Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI (M) today said that it plans a series of protests against the Centre's decision to raise retail petrol and diesel prices. Transporters of the state have already called for a strike on June 27 and propose to hold demonstrations and sit-ins to protest against the fuel hike. Senior CPI (M) leader and former chief minister of West Bengal, Jyoti Basu, hoped that the pressure tactics would work with the Centre. "That is why we are supporting from outside. We have told them that if we have differences with them, then we will go to the people. If that pressure works, then it will be good. Let us see it has been only one year," he said. "We have planned a series of programmes against the petrol price hike. We will finalise this at today's meeting," said Anil Biswas, West Bengal state secretary of CPI (M). India imports 70 percent of its crude and retailers had been squeezed by higher global prices because they had been selling petrol, diesel, cooking gas and kerosene at the same level for seven months. The Government took a middle path and hiked the prices trying to make a balance between politics and economics.

Congress protests Chhattisgarh CM's photograph on textbooks (Go To Top)

Raipur (Chhattisgarh): The opposition Congress Party in Chhattisgarh has taken umbrage over BJP Chief Minister Raman Singh's photographs appearing on the cover of school textbooks in the state. Mahendra Karma, the Congress candidate from Bastar and the leader of the Opposition in Chhattisgarh, claimed that this move to print the Chief Minister's photograph on the cover page in place of of Mahatma Gandhi's photograph showed a blatant disrespect and disregard for the Father of the Nation. "By printing the photograph of the chief minister on the cover page and Mahatma Gandhi's on the last page, indicates that he (Raman Singh) wants to prove himself great. This is a total disrespect to the Father of the Nation. The money spent on printing is of the Central Government given for the 'Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan', and I think, that the ruling government in the state is misusing it. The Congress will oppose this and also demonstrate till the time the photograph of the CM is not removed from the cover page," Karma said. A similar case of printing of photographs on bags was done by former chief minister Ajit Jogi before last year's general elections, which was criticised by the opposition BJP at that time. Reacting to Karma's allegation, Singh said he had printed his photograph not to gain votes like his predecessor Jogi, but as a measure to inspire children and their parents of the need for education. "We demonstrate on bag (photograph of Ajit Jogi printed on school bag) only after election commission said no to it. By this (printing of photograph) I have just put forth my appeal to the children and their family. I just wanted children to join the 'Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan' and nothing more. I don't think anybody should have problem. There is no need to give so much hype to this issue," said Singh. The Congress has demanded an inquiry team into the matter.

Hindus' oppression in Sindh brews storm in Pakistan (Go To Top)

Islamabad: The reported oppression of Hindus in Pakistan's Sindh province has brewed up a storm in the country with the opposition Pakistan People's Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) submitting an adjournment motion and asking for a debate on the matter. Sherry Rehman said that Pakistan did not have a good track record as far as human rights records went and the oppression of Hindus by the relatives of the Sindh Chief Minister, Arbab Ghulam Rahim in Khait Lari, Tharparker would only further tarnish Pakistan's image. "It is very unfortunate that the Sindh chief minister's relatives are committing crimes against the minority community with impunity at a time when President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz were trying to promote a soft image of Pakistan. We want to discuss this matter in house to expose the government's double standards," the Daily Times quoted her as saying. The PPPP had also in its motion stated that it was a serious matter and needed to be discussed in the National Assembly "It was a serious mater and needed to be discussed in the National Assembly because it could cause serious problems for Pakistan's image internationally," the paper quoted the motion signed by the eight PPPP MNAs as saying. The motion said that Pakistan Human Rights Commission's fact- finding mission to probe in to press reports that Hindus were being oppressed had revealed that a sizable Hindu community was being oppressed in Khait Lari, hometown of the Sindh chief minister.

BPO company in London report denies handling data  (Go To Top)
by Ramesh Ranjan

Gurgaon: Infinity e-Search, the web marketing company under question in the recent controversy related to data selling, today said that it did not handle any confidential data or banking transaction records. "We deal in web marketing. We are not a call centre nor do we deal in any banking or credit card transaction records. Nature of business is entirely different in our company in which we never need classified information of any client. We promote our clients in certain search engines and get them traffic. It's like making permutations and combinations to put our client's company's name in top order of any search engines," said Rahul Dutt, Managing Director, Infinity e-Search. Company's corporate lawyer Deepak Masih said that the company has sought an explanation from the controversial employee Karan Bahree to present his views. "We have asked from him about his stand in the matter. After his reply, we will initiate proceedings against him, if he is found guilty. As of now, let us not jump to any conclusion as it would be premature," said Deepak Masih, comapny's lawyer. Karan Bahree, who is supposed to have parted with the classified information, as of now, has not been accessible to media to answer what his activities were. He has been working with Infinity e-Search for last two months as junior content writer on probation. Earlier, he was reportedly working with a call centre.

Meanwhile, National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) President Kiran Karnik said that the association is looking into the matter and consulting the concerned authorities. "We are talking to concerned authorities as it may prove to be a serious breach of trust. Yes, it may have happened on the part of that individual person or the company is involved; all these things would be clear only after investigations, which is going on," said Kiran Karnik, President, NASSCOM on the sidelines of an interactive session here. He further said that the controversy may bring bad name to Indian BPO industry but these kind of things may take place anywhere. Karnik, however, expressed hope that the controversy would not have any negative impact on the booming IT sector. British Tabloid The Sun had claimed on Thursday that it had bought bank details of 1,000 Britons for just 3 pounds from a computer expert in Delhi who said he had obtained the information from contacts working in call centers. The paper said its reporter had obtained addresses, passwords, phone numbers and details of credit cards, passports and driving licenses, which could be used to raid unsuspecting victim's accounts. The Sun said the institutions targeted included many of Britain's top banks such as HSBC, Barclays, and Lloyds TSB. It added the call centre worker claimed he could provide 200,000 account details a month -- including those of U.S. citizens. The industry, which employs over 3.5 lakh people spread across nearly 600 international call-centre locations, had suffered a blow in April when the Pune Police arrested 16 Mphasis employees for a 350,000 dollars online credit-card fraud in which Citibank customers were allegedly enticed to part with their personal identification numbers.
