Flood alert sounded in Himachal

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh government today sounded a flood alert in Rampur, Bilaspur, Kinnaur, Mandi and some adjoining parts of Shimla as water level in Sutlej's tributary Pare Chu rose by around 50-60 meters. Floodwaters crossed the Rampur town damaging five bridges and submerging at least four villages even as the state administration asked people living in the low-lying areas to vacate their houses. The state government has requisitioned for six battalions of the Army for carrying out the rescue work. According to latest reports reaching here, two battalions were ready to take off from Chandigarh to the flood-affected areas. Two army choppers have been put into service to ferry the troops. State Chief Secretary Surjit Singh Parmar said: "An alert has been sounded in a 150 km radius and people living in low-lying areas have been asked to move to higher places." Parmar further said that the union home ministry has been informed about the development so that it could rush help, including Indian Army soldiers, if there was a further rise in the waters. Kinnaur DC Amandeep Garg said: "In all likelihood the Parechu Lake in Tibet has been breached. We are taking no chances and have asked people to vacate their homes in places close to the river banks." Meanwhile, as a precautionary step, the floodgates of the Naptha dam were opened so as to prevent collection of water in the low- lying areas. This not the first time these areas in the state are feared to be flooded. In August last year, a landslide blocked the flow of Tibet's Parechu river thereby causing an artificial lake to be formed. It had led to fears of a flood downstream in Himcahal Pradesh.
