Women's rally in Karachi calls for equal rights

     Karachi: A women's rally in Karachi late on Saturday resolved for the scrapping of all discriminations against women should be scrapped, urging that every citizen had equal rights. The women's convention was organized by the Muttaheda Qaumi Movement (MQM), a regional political party that is now part of the ruling coalition. MQM's supporters from all over Sindh and belonging to different religions and cultural and ethnic groups, gathered to participate in the rally. "Pakistan is a country. All the citizens living in this country have equal rights to everything," said MQM chief Altaf Hussain, to the thousands of women gathered at the rally, in his telephonic speech. Condemning the religious extremism, Hussain said that Islam recognised equal rights for men and women. He also criticised those who opposed equal rights for women. The resolution, adopted after Altaf Hussain's speech, demanded that credit should be given to women for starting small-scale businesses and resolved that exploitative practices like honour killing should be stopped. He said that the rally was an indication of the party's overwhelming victory in the upcoming local bodies elections.

Anil Ambani takes over as chairman of Reliance Infocomm (Go To Top)

     Mumbai: Anil Ambani, co-heir to India's largest private sector conglomerate, Reliance on Sunday took over as the chairman of Reliance Infocomm, flagship telecom firm of the Reliance group. Anil's three companies Reliance Energy, Reliance Capital and Reliance Infocomm are a part of an umbrella group called the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprises Group. Anil arrived at the Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC) in western Mumbai along with his wife Tina Ambani and mother Kokilaben where he offered prayers before the telecom firm's Board was reconstituted. The details of the reconstituted Board are not yet available. The brothers' split, announced by their mother on June 18, came less than three years after the death of their father, who founded Reliance as a commodity trader half a century ago.

Shane Warne to separate from wife: Paper (Go To Top)

     London: Australian leg spinner and bowling great Shane Warne will legally separate from his wife Simone soon, the couple reportedly said in a press statement issued in London on Saturday evening. "It is with regret that we inform you that we have decided to separate. We remain best of friends and we will both continue to be there for our three beautiful children," the Daily Times quoted the duo as saying in the statement. In his career spanning nearly a decade, the 35-year-old bowler has been surrounded with controversies. Lately, a model accused him of seeking sexual favours in a hotel room.

Eknath 'Ekki' Solkar dies (Go To Top)

     Mumbai: Former Test cricketer Eknath Solkar died here today at his residence following cardiac failure. He was 57. Solkar, was ill for the last four to five days. Solkar, popularly known as 'Ekki' started his Test Career versus New Zealand in 1969 and his debut one-day international was against England in 1974. His last Test was against England in 1977 and his last ODI was against New Zealand in 1976. He also featured in the inaugural 1975 World Cup. He played a total of 27 Test matches, scoring 1070 runs at an average of 59.44. His presence in ODI was comparatively less having played only seven matches, and scoring 169 runs at an average of 42.25. Eknath, himself a left arm medium and orthodox bowler, also has to his credit, of having snagged 53 catches in 27 matches, including 48 off the famed Indian Spin Quartet of Bedi, Chandrasekhar, Prasanna and Venkataraghvan.
