Five die in heavy rain in Gujarat

     Surat/Ahmedabad: At least five people have died in various parts of Gujarat following heavy rains. While two died in Surat, two other deaths were reported from Navsari in south Gujarat. One person died in Ahmedabad due to a building collapse in heavy rain. Authorities have also evacuated to safety as many as 500,000 following alerts sounded by the government. As heavy downpour swept away the belongings in several houses, many waded through the water with whatever they could lay their hands on. Chibaldar Dayaram Yadav, a resident accused the local authorities of not doing enough to help them. "Houses are filled with knee-deep water but the corporation is doing nothing. It was only when we made an effort that this school was opened to provide shelter to the affected," said Yadav. Reports of waterlogging were also received from different parts of the city due to heavy rains. According to the flood control department, Surat has received close to nine inches of rainfall since Friday night. Heavy rains have also been reported at many places in Valsad, Bharuch districts, as well as in the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman, in the past three days.

Jayalalithaa gets breather as court orders clubbing of cases (Go To Top)

     Bangalore: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J Jayalithaa on Monday got relief when a special court trying her disproportionate wealth cases ordered that two cases be clubbed together. In one case, Jayalalitha was accused of misusing public office for personal gains in the import of coal from Australia by the state-run electricity board and in the other of possessing assets disproportionate to her known sources of income. The special court at Bangalore, ordered assets case and the London Hotel case be heard together. "The court has ordered that both the cases be clubbed together and tried as one case. And further proceedings day after tomorrow," said DV Acharya, public prosecutor. The Madras High Court had earlier ordered the Bangalore court be given powers to decide the fate of the two cases. Last year, the Supreme Court had said that the manner in which the Madras trial court proceeded with the cases raised doubts about the free and fairness of the trial.

Man cuts off wife's nose for giving birth to girl child (Go To Top)

     Barabanki: In a gruesome incident, a man cut off his wife's nose just because she gave birth to a girl child. Police have arrested the accused. The incident happened in Sahanimau village in Barabanki district 25 km away from Lucknow. Shyam Bihari, the accused, married Kanti seven years back and the couple had a daughter before the woman gave birth to their second daughter. "I don't know what happened to me that day. There was no misunderstanding, no quarrel between me and my wife. I don't know why I did it," said Shyam Bihari. Kanti, who alleged that she was kept inside her house for two days without any food after the incident, said: "I gave birth to a girl and my husband wanted a boy. He was furious with me and he cut my nose. He never took me to any hospital I stayed at home for two days." The incident came to light after Kanti's parents learnt about it. They approached the police and an FIR was lodged against Bihari. The local SHO Suleman Khan said: "We have registered a case under the section of 326 IPC. The girl came to us with her father. We then sent her for medical treatment. We started searching for her husband and we have already arrested him."

Indian national goes missing in Pakistan (Go To Top)

     Hyderabad (Pakistan): The wife of an Indian national and temple caretaker in Pakistan has appealed for the safe release of her husband, who was reportedly picked up by sleuths of a Pakistani intelligence agency. Dinesh Kumar, the temple caretaker, had been living in Kotri for the past 12 years, and his whereabouts have not been known since May 8. In a letter written to Pakistani President, Prime Minister, Sindh Governor, Singh IGP, and other high-level dignitaries, she wrote: "On May 8, 10 personnel of an intelligence agency, with two constables from Kotri police station, raided our house, searched the entire house and took away Dinesh with his cellphone and a computer. He has not returned home since." Nirmala said that after the incident when she went to Kotri police station to lodge an FIR, the police refused to register her complaint saying that "an intelligence agency had pick up Dinesh for interrogation and he would return home". According to the Daily Times, she wrote in her letter that for the past 48 days her family had been living in fear and the temple had been unattended to. Appealing for the grant of Pakistani citizenship to her husband, she said that since 1992 Dinesh applied several times for Pakistani nationality, but the applications were rejected.
