HD Shourie passes away

     New Delhi: India's well-known foremost consumer activists, editor and photographer, Hari Dev Shourie passed away today morning. He was 93. A retired ICS, H D Shourie was a man with firm determination. He had fought against corruption and lawyers strikes, campaigned for proper blood banks and consumer courts. His organisation 'Common Cause' had influenced many significant decisions favouring the common man. Shourie had been named 'People of the Year, 2003'by the Limca Book of Records for 'the dedication to a cause.' It is also the result of Shourie's activism that political parties now file annual income tax returns. He also forced the government to set up consumer courts in the country and amend pension rules. His fight for the Right of Information Bill and transparency in governance is a legend. Shourie also made the PIL a potent weapon in the struggle for justice. He was father of Arun Shourie, former Minister for Communications, IT and Disinvestment; Deepak Shourie, Managing Director, Discovery Communications India; and Nalini Singh, TV journalist-anchor.

     Srinagar: The attendance by separatist Hurriyat leaders at an international peace conference in Srinagar, addressed by spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar, famed for his 'Art of living' has sparked off a debate. And the debate will be lively, given the fact that the two entities, Hurriyat and Ravishankar are as different from each other as 'chalk and cheese'. While the Hurriyat is a conglomeration of 20 odd separatist groups, Ravishankar is a spiritual leader preaching the gospel of peace and amicable livelihood among people.

Delhi police nabs Babbar Khalsa human bomb (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested a Babbar Khalsa militant from Timarpur area of North Delhi who was "to be used as a human bomb". Satnam Singh had been prepared by the militant group to be used as a human bomb and investigations were on to know the target, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Tajinder Luthra said. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the accused who was arrested by the Crime Branch sleuths, he said. Delhi Police had earlier this month arrested Jagtar Singh Hawara, Chief of the Pakistan-based militant outfit's India operations and an accused in assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, along with two other militants in connection with 22nd May twin blasts in cinema halls in the national capital. Hawara, described by the police as a "very big catch", had plans to kill some politicians and bureaucrats.

Yechuri, Brinda Karat to contest for Rajya Sabha from Bengal (Go To Top)

     Kolkata: Senior CPI(M) politburo members Sitaram Yechuri and Brinda Karat have been nominated to contest Rajya Sabha elections from West Bengal. The elections are to take place on July 14. Chittabrata Majumder, another politburo member will contest the third seat, CPI(M) state Secretary Anil Biswas said. The CPI(M), he said, would have 42 excess preferential votes after getting its candidates elected.
