Fernandes meets RSS leaders in Nagpur

Nagpur (Maharashtra): Keen to bridge the growing divide between the BJP and the right-wing Sangh Parivar, NDA convener George Fernandes met RSS chief K Sudarshan on Tuesday at the RSS headquarters in Mahal in Nagpur. RSS General Secretary Mohan Bhagwat was also presen at the meeting in which Fernandes reportedly expressed his views on the need to safeguard the future of the opposition NDA. The meeting assumes significance in the wake of the controversy generated earlier this month by BJP President L K Advani, when he described Pakistan's founder, Mohammed Ali Jinnah as a secular leader. That remark invited sharp criticism from RSS leaders, who said that it went against the grain of their ideology. So bitter was the trading of charges between the BJP and the RSS, that the latter even went to the extent of demanding Advani's resignation as BJP and Leader of the Opposition. These developments have prompted Fernandes to play peacemaker.

Ahmedabad: Villages and towns along the low-lying part of Gujarat coast have been placed on high alert following three days of continuous rainfall in the state. Officials have also warned fishermen from venturing out into the sea, as heavy rains are likely to continue within the next 48 hours. Gujarat has so far received 160 mm of rainfall, which is 160 percent above normal for June. The flood department has also said that Surat has received close to nine inches rainfall since Friday night.

Yashwant Sinha removed as BJP spokesman (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, has been removed from the post of spokesman of BJP today. Arun Jaitley has made the final announcement to this effect in a press conference. Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley will be the new party spokespersons. Manvendra Singh and Prakash Javdekar will be the additional spokespersons. "The panel of spokespersons has been reconstituted by party President L K Advani." Jaitley said. No reason was given for removal of Yashwant Sinha from the spokesperson's post but the decision seems to come as a result of his critical remarks on the party's government in Jharkhand. Last week, Sinha had launched an unbridled attack on BJP-headed Jharkhand government accusing it of corruption and extravagance.

Karat says Left boycott will continue (Go To Top)

Lucknow/New Delhi: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat today gave short shrift to reported missives from UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and NCP President Sharad Pawar to end the Left parties boycott of the UPA Coordination Committee meetings, saying that it would continue till the high fuel prices and the proposed divestment plans of government were not revoked. The ''Left will not compromise and allow divestment of 'Navratan' companies,'' he told mediapersons in Lucknow.

Initial reports suggested that the CPI(M), CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc sponsored 'Action Day' was most visible in Communist-ruled states like West Bengal and Kerala while it evoked a partial response in Bihar and Delhi. Other states saw lukewarm response to the protest against hikes of Rs 2.50 per litre for petrol and Rs 2 a litre for diesel. The response showed that the people are not happy with the government's policies, particularly its spree of disinvestment in profit-making public sector undertakings and the financial sector reforms, the Left leaders said. In the national capital, hundreds of Left activists joined a joint demonstration by the CPI (M), CPI, Forward Bloc and RSP at the busy ITO in central Delhi.
