Daughter-in-law files dowry case against Hooda

Panchkula: The Chief Minister of Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, is in trouble after his daughter-in-law, Geeta Grewal, filed a case of dowry harassment against him on Wednesday. In January 2004, Geeta filed a case against her husband Deepinder Hooda, father-in-law Bhupinder Singh Hooda, mother-in-law and sister-in-law accusing them of harassing her for dowry. "They started harassing me after a few days of marriage. They were demanding land, car and cash in hand. So, I have filled cases against four of them, BS Hooda, Usha Hooda (Wife) and Dipinder Singh Hooda and the sister-in-law of Saroj Hooda on 19th Jan 2004," said Geeta. The Panchkula District Court served notices to the defendants to appear before the court for hearing, on Wednesday (March 16, 2005). But Hooda filed an application requesting exemption from physical appearance in the court which the court accepted. "Earlier the court had fixed the date, March 16, 2005 for hearing, but the defendants filled an application to exempt them from physical appearance in the court. The court has accepted the application and fixed the next date on April 16, 2005," said Ashok Mehta, defence lawyer. Earlier, in February 2004, Geeta created problems for the Congress leader when she tried to meet Sonia Gandhi, in the company of some other women, to make a complaint against Mr Hooda. Geeta's attempt to talk to Ms Gandhi, however, remained unsuccessful.

PM meets Somnath, says no to confrontation (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee over breakfast today and sought to dispel any impression that the government had any plans to confront him on issues relating to legislative business and the conduct of the house. The Prime Minister is believed to have sought the meeting himself, and drove down to the Speaker's House on Akbar road to have breakfast and to discuss the recent controversy over the Supreme Court's interim order on the Jharkhand Assembly issue. Chatterjee was later quoted by wire reports as saying that Singh had told him that some sort of an impression has been created that there was some problem between the government and the Speaker and he wanted to dispel that. "He said there is nothing against the Speaker and we appreciate your concerns. There is no no confrontation or any such thing against the Speaker. It is for you to decide how you conduct your business," Chatterjee quoted the Prime Minister as saying. The Speaker said he told the Prime Minister that he was happy that he (Prime Minister) had intervened in the Jharkhand matter and resolved it. Last week at the height of the Jharkhand controversy, the Speaker had called a meeting of political parties and suggested that a Presidential reference be made to seek the Supreme Court's opinion on its order advancing the trial of strength and videography of the proceedings in Jharkhand Assembly. The government, however, turned down the suggestion for a presidential reference.
