Tomato ketchup can reduce cancer risk
(Go To Top)

London: Tomato sauce, it seems, has a special chemical ingredient that can reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer. According to researchers at the universities of Montreal and Ottawa, the chemical lycopene found in tomatoes has anti-oxidant properties that help to reduce pancreatic cancer risk by almost a third if taken regularly. The researchers claim that if lycopene is taken in a liquid form, the chances of combatting the disease are better. According to them, the oil used in the ketchup enables faster absorption of antioxidants by the intestines. If doctors are to be believed, the location of the pancreas inside the abdomen makes it very difficult for them to spot the disease, and even when symptoms such as abdominal pain and weight loss appear, they are hardly noticed. As a result, few people survive more than one year after the diagnosis. Although evidence suggests that daily intake of fruit and vegetables may reduce the risk of the ailment, the latest research that surveyed 462 cases of pancreatic cancer and did a comparative analysis of the eating habits of cancer patients with healthy people has revealed that tomatoes have the power to prevent the particular type of cancer. According to the Daily Mail, the researchers also found that men who ate tomatoes and tomato products every day were 31 per cent less prone to the disease, while in women, the risk declined by nine per cent.

Sydney: After countlesss reports on the health benefits of breastfeeding, a new report from NSW, takes into account the economic benefits of breastfeeding and how much it is worth to the Australian community. "Looking at the economics helps support the argument of why we need to encourage and support (breastfeeding),it's incredibly expensive to feed babies formula. Then there's the cost of healthcare services that breastfeeding prevents", Sydney Morning herald quoted Liz Develin, manager of nutrition and physical activity at NSW Health, as saying. The breastfeeding report bases itself on economic analyses by Australian National University-based Dr Julie Smith, who calculated Australian mothers produce about 34 million litres of breast milk a year. The milk was then costed based on its market value in "milk banks" in Europe. Dr Smith estimates the "capital stock value" - the entire present and future worth - of breastfeeding to be 37 billion dollars. If Australian women breastfed according to WHO standards, that value would increase to 100 billion dollars , Dr Smith said. The report, which will form the basis of a new statewide breastfeeding policy, lists the health, environmental and economic benefits of breastfeeding and suggests that mothers feed infants only breast milk till the age of six months, and promotes partial breastfeeding until 12 months.
