Beer bellies are risky for the heart (Go To Top)

Washington: A study conducted by researchers from the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has revealed that extra fat around the waist increases the risk of heart disease. The study, which appears in the April issue of the American Journal of Physiology- Endocrinology and Metabolism, states that inflammatory proteins produced by fat are linked to risk factors involving the heart, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and how the body responds to insulin. For their study, the researchers studied two proteins that promote inflammation, interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha along with a protein named plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, which promotes blood clots, in addition to two "good" proteins, leptin, which regulates energy metabolism, and adiponectin, which has anti-inflammatory effects. Researchers are of the belief that the production of adiponectin in subcutaneous fat is linked with an elevated risk of heart disease.
