ICHR reconstituted

     New Delhi: The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) has been reconstituted with Professor D N Tripathi, former Professor and Head of Department of Ancient History and Archaeology, Gorakhpur University being appointed its new chairman. The Government has nominated as many as 18 historians to the council for a period of three years. The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) was established in 1972 with a view to provide funds for historical research and to foster an objective and scientific study of history. It has been promoting historical research in the history of arts, literature and philosophy and allied subjects such as archaeology, numismatics, epigraphy, and study of manuscripts. The Council awards fellowships, study-cum-travel grants and publications subsidies. It also endeavours to make available source material as well as results of historical research through an ambitious publication programme. It also brings out a journal The Indian Historical Review which includes interpretative papers and reviews. It organises seminars and academic conferences and gives financial assistance for travel within and outside the country for conducting historical research. The Council also maintains a large and continuously expanding library for the use of historians and researchers. Documentation services are also provided. The most important function of the ICHR is to provide assistance to scholars/institutions for research and publications. National fellowships are awarded to eminent historians who wish to work on projects of special historical importance.

America giving boost to arms race in the region: BJP (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Criticising the US decision to supply F-16 warplanes to Pakistan and the offer of sale of similar planes to India, BJP today said it smacked of promoting arms race in the region and accused the government of airing "discordant" views on the issue. Senior BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh told newsmen here, he said, "The government's handling of the issue has much to be desired. The government is speaking in discordant voices and does not have a well considered approach" on the US announcements. ''India has emerged as a power to reckon with on its own strength and not because of any patronage or sponsor. It will be a power because of its own efforts and genuineness of its citizens,'' he said.

We cannot change borders, says PM to Shujat (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, told a visiting delegation of senior political leaders from Pakistan that he is looking forward to his meeting with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf next month. Dr Singh said, "History obliges us to seize all opportunities to pursue peace. We cannot change borders, but in a globalised world borders should not matter." The Pakistan delegation was led by former Prime Minister Shujat Hussain (President, Pakistan Muslim League) and included several senators and intellectuals.

Act Amend to allow women to work late night (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: In a major step to ensure equality of opportunity for women the Union Cabinet has decided to amend the Factories Act, 1946 so that women employees can work in the late night shifts. Talking to mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Jaipal Reddy said, "The Cabinet decided to amend the Factories Act, 1946 so that women can work between 10 PM and 6 AM. With adequate safeguards such as safety and dignity."
