Male Govt employees should reveal dowry details: SC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Centre and the state governments to consider asking all their male employees about the quantum of dowry taken by them before joining service. If the governments accept the apex court's approval, then a candidate aspiring to become a government employee and all government servants would have to provide information about the dowry taken by him and whether the same had been put in the name of their wives. "We direct the Centre and the State Governments to consider whether appropriate rules can be framed for compelling males seeking government employment to furnish information on whether they had taken dowry." "And if taken, whether the same has been handed over to the wife as contemplated by Section 6 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, calling for such information and from those already in employment," a Bench comprising Chief Justice R C Lahoti, Justice G P Mathur and Justice P K Balasubramanyan said. Expressing reservation against a SC order directing Patna HC to expeditiously dispose a matter relating to disproportionate assets case, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav filed an application in the apex court seeking modification of the order.

Lalu approaches SC on fodder scam case (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav on Tuesday sought the Supreme Court's permission to "communicate" with it "in confidence" about his apprehensions on the composition of a Patna High Court Bench constituted to hear his petition challenging sanction for his prosecution in the case. The apex Court, while asking the High Court to constitute a Bench headed by Justice Aftab Alam, had said the name of the other Judge in the Bench would be added later on. In the order sheet, Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad was named as the second Judge of the Bench. The Bench was asked to dispose of Prasad's petition challenging his prosecution in the case within 30 days. The Court had passed this order in a petition filed by JD(U) MP Rajiv Ranjan Singh 'Lallan" and BJP MP Sushil Modi seeking cancellation of Prasad's bail in fodder scam cases alleging that he was interfering with trial proceedings in the fodder scam and other cases pending against him. Prasad, in his application, made it clear that he had no objection to Justice Alam being part of the Bench saying "it is true that his counsel did not object when one of the two names were mentioned". On April 26, the Court was informed by the petitioners that Prasad and his wife had challenged the sanction of their prosecution in the disproportionate assets case before the Patna High Court long time ago but the petition remained undecided as bench after bench was refusing to hear it.

Maharashtra bar dancers stage protest (Go To Top)

Mumbai: Bar dancers in Maharashtra, who are facing a possible ban, protested against the state government on Tuesday. The bar girls have been on the warpath after state authorities ordered the shutting down of 600 cabaret joints that employ these girls to dance, saying they corrupt the youth, threaten local culture and encourage prostitution. Over the past few days, bar girls have organized several protests, have met Congress president Sonia Gandhi over the issue and sought a suitable rehabilitation plan. "The girls have been stigmatised due to this huge propaganda. We want the girls to come out and share their problems and views. Secondly, our demand was that of rehabilitation. If the order is stayed for some more time, then the authorities will get some time to draw a suitable action plan," said Varsha Kale, a member of Bar Girls' Association. Most bars in the state employ girls, who dress in colourful costumes and dance to Bollywood film songs, as customers shower them with currency bills. But the closure of the cabarets was likely to render jobless more than 150,000 people across the state, including dancers, waiters, bouncers and security guards, officials said.
