SC dismisses Pappu Yadav's bail plea

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed the bail petition of RJD MLA from Purnia Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav as withdrawn in the Ajit Sarkar murder case. Yadav withdrew his bail petition after the Apex Court showed reluctance to entertain his plea. Yadav, currently lodged in the Tihar Jail in connection with former CPM MLA Ajit Sarkar murder case, was produced in the court of additional district and sessions judge of Patna Jayant Kumar Sen through video-conferencing. The Supreme Court had ordered that Yadav be shifted from Beur prison in Patna to Tihar jail in Delhi to "prevent him from tampering with evidence and threatening the witnesses." It had said the trial of cases against Yadav at the sessions court in Patna should be conducted through video-conferencing. In exceptional situations where the Sessions Judge felt that the personal appearance of Yadav was required, the accused could be taken from Tihar jail with adequate security. The Judges had said the authorities should follow the rules and no special privileges should be given to the accused. On the visitation rights of his family in the jail, the Bench had said only those who were permitted by the Prison Manual would be allowed to meet him. The Bench had noted that Yadav had not shown any respect to the repeated orders of the court and, in fact, defied them to roam around in Madhepura, hosting a dinner in the jail on his release on bail and using cell phones and entertaining a large number of visitors while in custody. In its transfer order, it also had taken into consideration the manner in which he had addressed a public meeting while in judicial custody and the "royal treatment" given to him at the Patna Medical College hospital.

WB appoints Swiss professor to mediate Baglihar dam dispute (Go To Top)

Washington: World Bank officials have said that they have named a Swiss professor to mediate in the Baglihar dam dispute between India and Pakistan. Raymond Lafitte is a civil engineer and professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. The World Bank in its statement said that Professor Lafitte would be asked to make a finding on the differences between India and Pakistan on the construction of the Baglihar dam project. "Professor Lafitte will be asked to make a finding on differences between the two government concerning the construction of the Baglihar project," a statement from the bank said. Pakistan has from the very beginning opposed the construction of the Baglihar dam over River Chenab and said that not only was the construction in violation of the Indus Water Treaty 1960, but it also had the possibility of diverting the rivers waters according to India's advantage. It has also said that upon completion, the dam would deprive Pakistan of as much of seven-eight thousand cusecs of water per day, in the process adversely affecting wheat production in Pakistan's Punjab province. Earlier following the failure of the bilateral talks to solve the issue, Pakistan approached the World Bank to arbitrate the imbroglio by appointing neutral experts. The Chenab River is one of the rivers comprising the Indus river system. After the Partition of the Indian subcontinent, the Indus Waters Treaty was concluded with support from the World Bank. The Treaty divided the river systems between the two countries. The Bank is a signatory to the Treaty and earlier this year was approached by Pakistan to appoint a neutral expert to deal with the differences that had arisen between the two countries. Both India and Pakistan have found Professor Lafitte suitably qualified as a neutral expert. His findings will be made known in time. Under the terms of the Indus Waters Treaty, his determination will be final and binding. The Indus Waters Treaty was concluded by India and Pakistan on September 19, 1960. The World Bank is a signatory to the Treaty for certain specified purposes. It is not a guarantor of the Treaty. Many of the purposes for which the World Bank signed the Treaty have been completed. There are now three remaining responsibilities for the World Bank under the Treaty, relating to the settlement of differences and disputes.
