Muslim Women's Board rejects model 'nikahnama'

New Delhi: The members of the All India Mumlim Women Personal Law Board(AIMWPLB) today rejected the model Nikahnama earlier prepared by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB. They termed it as "bereft of Muslim women's rights" and said they would prepare its own code of marriage on the guidelines of Shariat. Shaista Amber, President of AIMWPLB, said," The model nikahnama is bereft of the rights of Muslim women. It does not clearly define talaq in light of the Shariat (Islamic jurisprudence). The model nikahnama prepared by the AIMPLB had failed to "redress the burning issues" confronting Muslim women in the country, she added. She also decried the existing practice of uttering talaq thrice in a row to annul a marriage as being detrimental to the over all interest of women, who remain the "victims of the malady". According to some media reports, AIMWPLB would also hold a two- day meeting on June 24 in Nainital. And, a broad outline of the new nikahnama is likely to be announced there. She told the new nikahnama, to be prepared by the AIMWPLB, would clearly spell out the guidelines concerning talaq in keeping with the Shariat. Amber said, "It will be our endeavour to protect the rights of Muslim women according to the Shariat laws. We will also help them in fighting exploitation," Amber said.

Manmohan, Advani interact (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Opposition leader L K Advani shared a common platform today. The occasion was a special memorial meeting for Swami Ranganathananda, the 13th President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, who died in Kolkata on April 25. "After seeing the video put together by the Ramakrishna mission, we feel proud when he talks about India, about the unity in India. He talks with so much passion and earnestness. This is inspite of it being a footage from 1985, that was 20 years ago. His messages have so much meaning even today," said L K Advani, Leader of Opposition. Advani also said that his messages were so inspiring that he can be referred to as the Adi Shankara of today. "Many famous people, like Pundit Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Vajpayee and many more senior leaders have been counselled by Swamiji over the years to the extent it has become a regular practise," said L K Advani, Leader of Opposition. The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, also paid tribute to Swami Rangnathananda of Ramakrishna Mission. "He was a learned and wise man, one who attained the ultimate in the knowledge of the self, a being who radiated. He founded many new centres of learning and meditation for the Ramakrishna Mission both at home and abroad. Generations of Indians have sat at his feet and imbibed the teaching of some of the greatest texts, epics and scriptures. He was one of the most poetic and philosophical interpreters of the Gita," said Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister. Former Prime Minister I K Gujral was also present on the occasion.

Reservation controversy hits Aligarh Muslim University (Go To Top)

Aligarh: A fresh controversy has arisen after Aligarh Muslim University's Executive Committee decided to grant 50 percent reservation to Muslims from all over India and another 25 percent reservation for students from the University. There was a mass demonstration in the city today in protest against the decision, supported by some of the teachers from the University. Dr. Suhaib Sherwani, a professor of the Department of English, AMU said the decision was dubious. "Aligarh Muslim University is s central university. The university is fully funded by the Central Government. So fifty per cent reservation for a particular community is a debatable issue. We are really not happy with the decision. At any point of time, in any case AMU will have a strength of fifty percent of muslims not less than that. So,I can't figure out what they want to achieve by implementing such a decision,"said Dr.Suhaib Sherwani, English Professor,AMU On the one hand, many of the students expressed satisfaction and supported the decision as they felt that such regulations would prevent the institution from being reduced to a local institution catering just to the needs of few districts including Aligarh, while Rehman, another student thinks it might instigate anti- Muslim feelings in the country. "No doubt the Muslim population will be benefitted by this decision. But it will generate anti -Muslim feelings outside. The image will be that Aligarh Muslim University is just like another Madrasa where the Muslim youths are imparted special kind of trainings,"said Rehman. "Our university is a minority education centre. The basic purpose of the minority institutions established and administered by minority communities are that they serve the benefits of the children of the minority community. According to the Aligarh Muslim University (Amendment) Act 1981, it is a minority institution, established and administered by the Muslims of India. So obviously the basic mandate as given by the Parliament, is the educational advancement of Muslims of India,"said Wasi Haider,Physics Professor,AMU Many minority associations including The All Indian Minorities Council have welcomed the move. They have also called for affirmative action in support of other weaker sections of the society who are deprived of social, economic and educational priveleges.

Uma meets Advani (Go To Top)

New Delhi: After a day-long wait, BJP senior leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti finally met party president LK Advani this evening. After the meeting Uma described the meeting as one between a daughter and a father. She said she conveyed to Advani about her experiences at Amarkantak. Only this morning Uma had returned from Amarkantak after spending one-and-a-half months there. Newly appointed Madhya Pradesh BJP chief Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) convenor S. Gurumurti, who is said to have arranged the meeting, were present on the occasion. During the meeting, Advani is learnt to have convinced Uma to give up Madhya Pradesh politics and concentrate on national politics. It is learnt that Uma would be soon installed as party's general secretary. The issue of Uma's tussle with MP Chief Minister Babu Lal Gaur also came up for discussion. After the meeting, the `sanyasin' said that being a CM Babu Lal Gaur has the prerogative to include whoever he wants to be in his cabinet. After Gaur was installed as the CM around one year ago, news reports said that a rift had erupted between the duo on the issue of constituting the cabinet. Regarding the MLAs who went to meet her at Amarkantak, Uma said, "I don't know which MLAs you are talking about." Actually Gaur had directed his party MLAs not to meet Uma at Amarkantak. But, defying his orders, a host of BJP MLAs continuously met Uma while she stayed at the religious place. Interestingly, the party's central leadership kept mum over the issue.

Congress workers manhandle Defence Minister Pranab (Go To Top)

Kolkata: Ahead of the announcement of Congress candidates for the June 19 Kolkata civic polls, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee was today mobbed in front of the Congress party office by some local party workers, who were unhappy with the allocation of the tickets. In the ensuing mjlie, Mukherjee was not only pushed around by the party workers but his clothes were also torn off by the assaulters, who expressed their displeasure over the non- allocation of tickets to the grass roots workers. "Zafar Ali (from ward no. 55) was our candidate till yesterday. Even till morning we supported him. But now when the announcement was made, he was no longer the candidate. What is this going on?" alleged Mohammed Jalalluddin, a Congress worker. Mukherjee, who is president of the state party unit, was here to announce the name of the candidates for the polls but instead was mobbed by the workers, the moment he stepped out of his car. One of the attackers allegedly slapped Mukherjee while others abused him. Visibly angered Mukherjee too tried to retaliate but was pacified by his party colleagues. Acting state Congress president Pradip Bhattacharjee also became a victim of the attack. The chaos lasted for about 10 minutes before the security stepped in and controlled the situation. Later, Mukherjee, while announcing the names of the candidates at a press conference, downplayed the incident. "It is unfortunate, but sometimes it happens," said Mukherjee. When asked about the possibility of a disciplinary action to be taken against the alleged attackers, Mukherjee sought to put the responsibilty squarely on the party high command. "That is for the party to decide. These are not to be shared with you," he added.
