Madonna sparks Israeli diplomatic war (Go To Top)

London: Pop diva Madonna has become the cause of a row between Israel's Foreign Minister and the Israeli ambassador to Washington. Silvan Shalom, the Foreign Minister, and ambassador Danny Ayalon are involved in a bitter feud after the embassy failed to arrange a meeting between Madonna and the minister's socialite wife when the pop diva visited Israel last year, according to the Independent. The row reportedly began after the ministry dismissed the ambassador's personal assistant, who failed to arrange a tete-a- tete with Madonna. The ministry says he was fired because his contract had expired while Embassy sources said it was an act of revenge, ordered by Mr Shalom. "It appears to me that the source of the bizarre demand for dismissal is the Foreign Minister's bureau. Moreover, this is the demand of the Foreign Minister's wife," Ayalon said.

Rolling Stones support Brian Jones 'biopic' (Go To Top)

Washington: The world's most successful touring rock-band 'The Rolling Stones' have decided to support a new film which claims to finally solve the mystery behind the death of guitarist Brian Jones. Director Stephen Woolley has reportedly said that he has received the consent of Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to make a biopic on the late Brian Jones, titled 'Stoned.' "From what I have heard, they (the Stones) have no problem with the film or what we are about," Rate the Music quoted Woolley as saying at the Cannes Film Festival. "But I deliberately did not involve them because I did not want it to be a film about The Rolling Stones," he added. Jones was found dead in his swimming pool and was initially thought to have died from a drink and drugs overdose, but there are many who believe that the death was not an accident. Woolley also claims to have uncovered new evidence from a woman which he believes is so strong he may yet pass on her testimony to the police.

Divorce is the secret behind women's success (Go To Top)

London: Divorce can be the key to success for women. According to a new research divorced women, far from scraping a living from the meagre maintenance payments of their former partners, are richer than ever before. They work longer, earn more and have higher household incomes than their married or single counterparts, a report by leading economists reveals. "Our results cast doubt on the widely held view that divorce causes large declines in economic status for women,'' say the economists, who report their findings in The Journal of Human Resources. Leading divorce lawyers say there are two reasons for the turnaround in fortune. First, courts are giving women a bigger slice of their husband's earnings - and their future earnings. Second, the rise of women in the workplace means divorced women have the freedom to work hard and get ahead. In many cases, women have to start work to make ends meet. However, this is all well and good for women married to rich men. But for many couples there isn't enough money to start with. Halving an income to support two households can leave both partners worse off, said Peter Morris, a solicitor of Langleys in York. The life-changing experience of divorce, and the need to earn an income, can lead to women becoming more financially independent, he added.

Yoko Ono blasts documentary on Lennon's assassin (Go To Top)

New York: Beatles legend John Lennon's wife Yoko Ono is reportedly furious with a British television station's plan to air a jailhouse interview with her husband's killer, on the anniversary of his death. John Lennon's widow said it's "horrible" that the somber day will be marred by a documentary about Mark David Chapman, who is serving 20 to life in Attica. "It shows a lack of understanding of the painful memories of what happened to John's beautiful life," Ono was quoted by Nydailynews, as saying. "Myself, John's family and so many fans will be hurt by the showing of such a program," she added. Chapman was interviewed behind bars in 1981, 1991 and 1992 by author Jack Jones, who handed over 40 hours of tapes to Channel 4 for its anniversary show. The station defended its decision to give Chapman the star treatment on a day usually dedicated to Lennon's memory. "It's very much a serious documentary and will be handled accordingly," a spokeswoman said.
