Five sentenced to life in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced five persons to life imprisonment for burning a man to death during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots following the October 30 assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Additional Sessions Judge N P Kaushik sentenced Rajinder Singh, Piyarey Lal, Dharampal, Ranbir Singh and Baru Mal who were part of a mob of around 30-40 people which killed Sardar Baba Singh in the Amar Colony area of Nangloi on November 1, 1984. According to prosecution, Baba Singh was attacked while he and his family were fleeing from his house after coming to know that the Gurudwara in the area had been attacked. The killers poured kerosene oil on Singhs body and then set him on fire. Later on September 7, 1985, his widow filed an affidavit before the Lt Governor of Delhi who forwarded the case to the Special Riot Cell for investigation. The widow submitted in the affidavit that the local police refused to register a case. ''What can we do if your husband has been killed. Your man has killed our mother,'' policemen allegedly told her. After probing the case, the Riot Cell registered an FIR against the five persons at Nangloi police station on July 2, 1996.

Tandon takes over as CEC (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Election Commissioner BB Tandon today took charge as the country's new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Information and Broadcasting Secretary Naveen Chawla filled the slot left vacant due to Tandon's elevation and took charge as the Election Commissioner. After taking the charge, Tandon expressed disappointment over the recent remarks on the independent body, saying that the incident was unfortunate. A senior bureaucrat, L V Saptharishi, has alleged Tandon and Election Commissioner N Goapalaswami of being casteist and biased at the time of countermanding of Chhapra Lok Sabha polls in 2004 general Elections. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav had contested from the Chhapra constituency, which went for a repoll later. However Yadav eventually won the repoll. Yadav's comments came after an election observer at the time of general elections, L.V. Saptarishi alleged that Tandon and another Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswamy deliberately countermanded polling in Yadav's constituency. "The developments over the last one week have been most unfortunate. I have been greatly pained and hurt over these developments since May 7th in which wild and baseless allegations have been made against me and my colleague Shri N.Gopalaswamy. In particular, the scurrilous allegation that we made certain derogatory remarks against a particular community and that we wanted to teach a lesson to a particular leader is most reprehensible. On that very day itself I had denied that allegation as being totally false and baseless," Tandon told newsmen after taking charge here.
