Maleeha Lodhi tipped to be next Pakistan envoy in India

Islamabad: Pakistan's journalist-turned-diplomat Dr Maleeha Lodhi, who is currently the country's high commissioner to Britain, is among four candidates who are being shortlisted to take over as the next envoy to India. With Pakistan's incumbent High Commissioner to India, Aziz Ahmad Khan, set to complete his three-year diplomatic assignment in Delhi in the third quarter of this year, Lodhi and Pakistan's envoys to Canada, Japan and Germany are in the race for this prestigious assignment. Pakistan's High Commissioner to Canada Shahid Malik, its ambassador to Japan Kamran Niaz, its envoy to Germany Asif Aizadiee and Lodi are being considered by the Pakistan Foreign Office for the assignment, reports The News. In all, Islamabad has to clear the appointments of 12 new envoys and should Lodhi be shifted to New Delhi, then former Pakistan Foreign Secretary Riaz Ahmed Khokhar is likely to be posted to London. Dr. Maleeha Lodhi could be the best choice for the challenging assignment in New Delhi should Islamabad decide to opt for a non-career diplomat, as she is known for taking on challenging tasks, the paper quoted informed sources as saying. Lodhi has already served as Ambassador in Washington and prior to her diplomatic postings, she was the editor of several leading Pakistani dailies. The summary for posting of 12 new ambassadors has been sent to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz for approval and as the same is received, the agreema would be sought from the respective countries, the paper quoted the sources as saying.
