Stars Wars III gets smashing opening in Indian metros (Go To Top)

Bangalore/Mumbai: The grand finale to the "Star Wars" saga opened to packed theatres in Indian metros on Friday as fans queued for hours to get into cinemas. The cult space classic has generated an estimated 16.5 million dollars at debut midnight showings alone. The unprecedented tally reported by distributor 20th Century Fox from some 2,900 midnight screenings fuelled anticipation that "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" would mark one of the biggest film openings of all time. In India, where Bollywood song and dance sagas rule the roost with Hollywood making a presence only in select metros, the movie thought is expected to garner only a fraction of its staggering US release. The craze the film has generated is nevertheless unprecedented. Crazy youngsters camped all night outside theatres in Bangalore to grab ticket cancellations. Those lucky enough to watch the movie came out in the daze of the fantastic special effects and nostalgia of the final sequel. "As a fan of Star Wars I have seen all the episodes of Star Wars and I've always waited for this part. This is the one where Dark Raider has become an evil man. I've waited all my life to see it," said Shankar Bannerjee, a diehard Star Wars fan. "The movie is fantastic. Special effects are out of the world. Really very, very good," added Kulbhushan, another fan. In Mumbai, the blistering pace of advance ticket orders for "Revenge of the Sith" accelerated. Call lines were jammed and theatre complexes had to call in extra guards to control the swelling crowd, which had fans from nine to ninety. "I've seen all the movies like lots of times. Dark Raider, he has the coolest costume, coolest mark, his voice is very good," said Neeraj, a young fan. Experts said they expected "Sith" to easily gross between 35 million dollars and 40 million dollars on its first day in North American theatres. That would put it in the same league as "The Return of the King," "The Matrix Reloaded," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "Spider-Man" and its sequel. "Spider-Man 2" boasts the biggest first-day box office ever, 40.4 million dollars, while "Shrek 2" holds the record for highest single-day gross of 44.8 million dollars earned in its fourth day of release. The original "Spider-Man" is the all-time weekend box office champ, grossing nearly 115 million dollars in its first Friday-through-Sunday frame. In the vacuum of official estimates of first-day business for "Sith," advance ticket orders offered further evidence that the film was a blockbuster in the making.
