Hurriyat to go to Pakistan on June 2

Srinagar: The All Party Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today accepted the invitation of Pakistan government to visit Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir on June 2. ''We have decided to go to Pakistan and PoK on June 2 in the Srinagar-Muzzaffarbad bus,'' said Mirwaiz Umar after an emergency meeting of the executive council of the group in Srinagar. He said the high-level Hurriyat delegation going to the neighbouring country and Pok will hold talks with the political and militant leadership there to resolve the Kashmir issue. The composition of the delegation will be decided tomorrow. The Hurriyat leaders will apply for travel documents on Thursday, he added. The Mirwaiz said Hurriyat would like to resume dialogue process with Centre on return from Pakistan. He also expressed the hope that India will also extend a formal invitation to the separatist leadership for the next round of talks. "Although the indications emanating from New Delhi have been positive and encouraging there has been no formal invitation or contact as to when the Centre would like to meet the Hurriyat conference," he said. Pakistan High Commission in India had delivered the invitation on Tuesday (May 24) to all the leaders of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) to visit Pakistan, a move perceived to be aimed at bringing the Kashmiri leadership into confidence over the recent peace initiatives with India. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf met Hurriyat leaders last month when he made his first visit to New Delhi after the disastrous Agra summit in 200. Terming the All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) the ''true representatives'' of the Kashmiri people, General Musharraf has called for a trilateral arrangement wherein Kashmiris become part of the dialogue process. ''Now we have a breakthrough, as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has allowed them (Hurriyat leaders) to travel to Pakistan... so once they visit us and they also talk to the Indian government, it will facilitate a trilateral arrangement,'' he said in a recent interview to the Daily Times.

New Delhi: The estimated HIV infected patients in India have gone up by 28,000 taking the total tally of patients to 5.134 million. The latest estimates released here by Union Health Minister Dr. Anbuman Ramadoss show that there is no galloping HIV epidemic in India as a whole, as no evidence of upsurge in HIV prevalence has been observed in the country. Ramadoss said the adult prevalence was 9.16 on every 1,000 people while the overall prevalence for the entire population was 0.91 per cent. He said the figure for the HIV infections for 2003 was 5.106 million with a prevalence of 0.9 per cent. Tamil Nadu, which had a high prevalence of HIV cases, has shown early signs of sero-stabilization. The latest estimates show that India remains a low prevalence country with overall HIV prevalence of 0.91% i.e. less than 1% of the population.

Ailing white tiger dies at Nandankanan zoo (Go To Top)

Bhubaneswar: India's dwindling tiger population, under intense media glare, further declined as an ailing white tiger died at the Nandankanan zoo in Bhubaneshwar on Tuesday (May 24). The 15-year-old white tiger called Jawahar was undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the zoo hospital for many days. Zoo officials said the tiger had developed sores on his body and a few of his wounds had turned septic. "The only problem he had was that he repeatedly used to get wounds which did not heal. We were taking all needed precautions of blood test, de-worming, injections etc.," said S.C.Dinakar, deputy director of Nandankanan zoo. Veterinary doctors at the zoo said the tiger did not survive despite several precautions taken by them. "We put water on him also as it is so hot and he was living in a tin shed. We were taking maximum care of him. The fans were also on. He was eating well also, only yesterday he ate around five kilogram of meat," said Dr. Bivekanand Tripathy, a vet at the zoo. Jawahar was born at Nandankanan in 1990. After his death, the zoo now has only 13 white tigers, five of which are females. There are 18 other big cats in the park. Nandankanan has a dubious record with its upkeep of tigers when in 2000, 13 white tigers died in four days. On Monday, prime minister Manmohan Singh went on a much-hyped visit to Ranthambhore tiger reserve in Rajasthan and vowed to protect the national animal. Singh has taken personal interest in the tiger crisis after a national uproar over a report that poachers had wiped them out in another reserve.
