Reliance Infocomm introduces wireless Internet

     Chandigarh: In a significant step towards providing internet service to remote and rural areas Reliance Group's flagship company, Reliance Infocomm launched here on Wednesday the wireless Internet service for Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. Launching the service, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Reliance Infocomm Himanshu Kapania claimed that once completed, the company would offer one of the biggest wireless Internet penetrations in the region. He said that the new service would provide voice and data coverage along national and state highways and in rural areas of the region. "Reliance is already providing coverage in 334 towns of Punjab (200), Haryana (113) and Himachal Pradesh (21) and would be adding another 96 towns by September," said Kapania. In the three states its network covers 19,898 villages and 3,940 km of National Highways, he claimed. Talking to mediapersons Kapania said that under the new service 428 towns and 20,000 villages would be covered in the two states and Chandigarh by September this year. "Reliance's pan-India CDMA 2000 1X network supports voice and Internet services. Almost all Reliance wireless products, including Reliance India Mobile and Fixed Wireless Phone have an inbuilt modem and are capable of providing Internet connectivity at speeds up to 144 kbps," he said. Kapania informed that the monthly charges of the new service range between Rs 650 and Rs 900 with some free data download. Besides there is a zero commitment plan in which usage charges of 50 paise per min during day and 25 paise per minute during night would be applicable, he added.

Maruti launches 'Swift' at competitive price (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: India's largest car maker Maruti Udyog Ltd launched its new model premium compact car 'Swift' here on Wednesday at a competitive price. The new model will be available in three variants. The 1.3-litre petrol engine Swift, Suzuki's world car, at what it called introductory prices of Rs 3.87 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Other two variants, VXi variant which saw participation by 25 Indian engineers from Maruti at the design stage and ZXi variant, priced at Rs 4.05 lakh Rs 4.85 lakh respectively. Zxi variant carries features like automatic climate control and dual front airbags. The car will be available in a riot of new colours, ranging from orange to bright green. Company officials claim that 7,000 cars of the new model have already been booked. Company officials claim that the new model is innovative and has competitive edge. However, some market analysts feel that the new model will create competition among its own model and the new car will eat into the share some of Maruti's existing models like the Wagon R and Esteem. TenSports to telecast Pak-India football series live (Go To Top)

      Islamabad: Sports channel `TenSports' will telecast live the forthcoming Indo-Pak three-match football series beginning in Pakistan from June 12. An agreement to this effect was signed between the Sports channel and Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) last evening. Describing the development as no mean achievement, PFF chief Faisal Saleh Hayat said: "It is for the first time in Pakistan that this has happened and I think it goes to show that we are making serious efforts to promote the game in the country." While the first match would be played in Quetta in natural daylight, the next two games at Peshawar and Lahore on June 16 and 18, respectively, would be played under floodlights. "The purpose of organising matches under lights is to attract crowds and generate interest. Although Peshawar and Lahore centres are not equipped to hold night matches, still we have made temporary arrangements to bring in the crowds," the Dawn quoted Hayat as saying in Islamabad. "Never before has there been so much football activity taking place in Pakistan," he added. According to the paper, the PFF is currently seeking sponsorship for the football series.

Sania moves into second round in French Open doubles (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Sania Mirza teamed up with Russian Anna Chakvetadze to move into the second round of the women's doubles event at the Frech Open tennis in Paris today. According to the sources, the 18-year-old, who lost to Gisela Dulko of Argentina in her first round singles match yesterday, and her Russian partner had little trouble in packing off Kristina Brandi of Puerto Rico and Nana Miyagi of Japan 6-2 6-3. The Indo-Russian duo will now take on 16th seed Zi Yan and Jie Zheng of China in the second round. Yan and Zheng thrashed Denisa Chladkova of Czech Republic and Ruxandra Ilie of Romania 6-1 6-2 in the first round.
