India suspends fencing on Bangladesh border

New Delhi: India has suspended fencing work at several places along the Indo-Bangla border following objections raised by Bangladesh. Officials said that though New Delhi wants Dhaka to fast implement a proposal for "co-ordinated patrolling" and the fence was being constructed for thwarting instances of illegal activity, including smuggling and incursions into Indian territory, India suspended the work at several places along the Bangladesh border. They said that work, has been stopped in certain patches till the Foreign Secretary level talks, expected to take place in early July in New Delhi. Officials further say that India's decision will affect work on the 212 patches identified along the 4095-kilometre long Indo- Bangla border. Although the fence is being erected 150 yards inside the border to check illegal immigration from Bangladesh and trans-border crimes like smuggling, abductions and cattle-lifting, Bangladesh has vociferously opposed the erection of the fence, even to the extent of opening fire on the Indian side, in an attempt to stop the fencing work.

Volcanic eruptions rock Barren Islands (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Volcanic eruptions have been noticed at Barren Islands in the Indian ocean, 135 kms north east of Port Blair. According to a Coast Guard release here, fresh eruption of lava and smoke had been seen on the Island by Coast Guard ship Sagar and Dornier aircraft who patrol in Andaman and Nicobar seas. The small, uninhabited 3-km-wide island is accessible only to Coast Guard and naval ships maintaining regular patrol in the area. Barren Island, a possession of India in the Andaman Sea about 135 km NE of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands, is the only historically active volcano along the N-S-trending volcanic arc extending between Sumatra and Burma (Myanmar). The 354-m-high island is the emergent summit of a volcano that rises from a depth of about 2250 m. The island contains a roughly 2-km-wide caldera with walls 250- 350 m high. The caldera, which is open to the sea on the west, was created during a major explosive eruption in the late Pleistocene that produced pyroclastic-flow and -surge deposits. The morphology of a fresh pyroclastic cone that was constructed in the center of the caldera has varied during the course of historical eruptions. Lava flows fill much of the caldera floor and have reached the sea along the western coast during eruptions in the 19th century and more recently in 1991 and 1995.
