Ramu's 'Sarkar' enrages UAE Olympic champ (Go To Top)

London: Ramgopal Verma's 'Sarkar' might have won him accolades from film critics, but the 'Big B' starrer film has enraged UAE's first Olympic medallist, Sheikh Ahmed al-Maktoum, who claims that a character in the flick labels him a mafia assassin. Ahmed, a shooting champion in Athens 2004 and a member of the Dubai royal family, says that he felt insulted after watching the movie, because it introduced a gold medallist shooter from Dubai as a mafia don, which was hired by an underworld gang to shoot one of its rivals. "He (Ahmed) had seen the film and told me that it was a direct insult to him. The movie does not name him but he is the only shooter from all of the UAE to have won a gold medal in the Olympics. While we in the shooting circle talked about it, others too were quite upset about the reference," BBC quoted one of India's top international shooters, Moraad A Khan, as saying. A spokesperson for Verma, Ravi Prakash, however, said an apology had been issued soon after the release of the film in Dubai and the matter was resolved. "It was pure coincidence. In an attempt to make the script more interesting, the writer added this angle and we were completely unaware of the real-life context. We had absolutely no idea [Sheikh al-Maktoum] was also an Olympic gold medallist in shooting," Prakash was quoted as saying. Prakash added that the movie was released worldwide on 1 July, and the initial screenings in Dubai were stopped after Ahmed raised an objection. After that the apology note was sent and the movie was screened without the controversial scene being edited.

Gene that triggers development of breasts (Go To Top)

London: UK scientists have discovered that a gene, named after the James Bond villain Scaramanga, that can trigger the development of breasts, that may help in learning more about the progression of breast cancer, says a study published in journal Genes and Development. During the development of an embryo, formation of organs is tightly controlled by specific genes. This process controls the development of breasts in humans but this can go awry, resulting in fewer, extra or misplaced breasts. "Identifying the Scaramanga gene is a real advance in our understanding of the early steps in breast formation. By learning more about this gene and the protein it produces, it will allow us to determine how normal breast development is initiated and, importantly, examine how this is connected with breast cancer," said Professor Alan Ashworth, Director of The Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre. By studying abnormal breast development in the lab, scientists at The Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre identified the Scaramanga gene, which regulates the early stages of breast development, and influences the number and position of breasts. "Whilst proteins carefully control the development of breast cells in the embryo, inappropriate signals to breast cells during adulthood by these same molecules may cause breast cancer. We already believe that the protein produced by the Scaramanga gene is linked with breast cancer and the next steps are to study this in more detail," said Ashworth. Like the gene's namesake, Scaramanga, 1 in 18 people have an extra nipple, which can resemble freckles or moles. This is a normal occurrence and does not mean anything is wrong with the person but it's important that this extra tissue is checked for abnormalities like all breast tissue.
