Gohana (Haryana): Angry mobs enforcing a shutdown in the town of Gohana in Haryana on Friday in protest against the burning of houses of Dalits two days ago, attacked three buses in Panchkula and blocked the national highway at several places in the state. Security had be immediately beefed up in Gohana, though there were indications of the situation limping back to normal and victims gradually returning to their homes. While schools and shops opened and banks and commercial establishments functioned normally, senior administration and police officials were camping in the town keeping a strict vigil, official sources said. Two buses, one of Haryana state Roadways and the other belonging to Punjab Roadways were partially damaged in Panckula on the outskirts of Chandigarh when some persons armed with hockey sticks and iron rods broke the window panes of two buses at Labour Chowk this morning. Later, the tyres of another Haryana roadways bus were set afire, official sources said adding that the mob also caused minor damage to two twowheelers.

They squatted on the National Highway forcing disruption of traffic, the sources said adding that situation was tense. The protestors also demanded registration of criminal cases against the District Collector and Suprintendent of Police, Sonepat, official sources said. In Hansi town of Hisar district, several people blocked the Delhi-Hisar Highway. Shops and commercial establishments in Hansi remained closed as protestors staged demonstration. Meanwhile police said it had intensified its campaign to apprehend all the persons including the son and brother of Sonepat BJP MP, Kishan Singh Sangwan, against whom a case under various sections of the IPC and Arms Act was registered in connection with the Gohana arsoning incident. Special police teams have been sent to the concerned villages for conducting raids and arresting the 23 persons named in the FIR on the arsoning incident in Balmiki colony of Gohana. Police patrolling had also been intensified in the town as a precautionary measure and the Balmiki colony, the scene of the mayhem, is being safeguarded by the armed police, the sources said. Umer Farooq to lead 5-member Hurriyat team for talks with PM (Go To Top)

Srinagar: Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the chairman of the moderate faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) will lead a five-member delegation at the third round of talks with the Centre on September 5. Apart from Farooq, the other members of the team are former Hurriyat chairmen Abdul Gani Bhatt and Maulavi Maulana Abbas Ansari, Bilal Gani Lone and Fazal Haq Quereshi. The Mirwaiz told reporters here today that the delegation will leave for New Delhi on September 4. All the four are the members of the executive committee of the Hurriyat and had visited Pakistan in June. The Hurriyat's meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be its first with the UPA-led government since it came to power in May last year. Earlier the second round of the talks between the Centre and the Hurriyat leaders was held on March 27 and 28, 2004. The focus of those deliberations was on the alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, the Centre's steps to curb such violations and the Hurriyat demand for the release of more political detenus. The meeting took place with the then Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister LK Advani.

The March 2004 meeting was preceded by the first round of talks on January 22 at which several incidents of security forces- related rights violations, including the one at Bandipora, were taken up. Advani had then issued instructions to the security forces to observe "zero level" human rights violations and deal with the violators in a strict manner. In between March 2004 and September 2005, the Hurriyat leaders met Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf during his visit to Delhi between May 16 and 18, 2005. They were then firmly told that their participation in the composite dialogue process in so far as the Kashmir issue was concerned was dependent on them getting an invitation from the Indian Government. They were also told that it was necessary for all factions espousing the Kashmiri cause to unite under one umbrella for either Pakistan or India to consider their participation in the dialogue process with any degree of seriousness.

Exiled Tibetans celebrate Tibet's 45th Foundation Day (Go To Top)

Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh): Tibetans living in India celebrated the 45th anniversary of their government-in- exile at Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh on Friday. After an abortive uprising against the Chinese rule, the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, and thousands of his followers fled to India in 1959 and set up the government-in-exile in this scenically located town in 1960. Since then, the Buddhist god-king has been living in India. He has since renounced independence and says he only wants more autonomy for Tibet, while China charges the spiritual leader with continuing to provoke separatism. Hundreds of Tibetans and foreigners assembled at their main temple as the Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government, Samdhong Rimpoche, flagged off the celebrations. Later, a cultural extravaganza showcasing traditional Tibetan dance and music was also held. Rimpoche hoped the talks with Chinese authorities would evoke a solution in the near future. "We are expecting a sustainable dialogue in the near future. And this year, the fourth round up discussion at Switzerland in Bern was fruitful, and now, we are looking forward to the fifth round of discussion where we will be able to express all points in a frank and free manner." Rimpoche said. The latest round of talks between the Dalai Lama's envoys and Beijing government officials on the future of Tibet took place at the Chinese Embassy in Bern last month, but the two sides have admitted that the talks have not yet borne fruit, despite a change in his stand. The government-in-exile hopes to form a free and democratic government in Tibet some day. About 1,34,000 Tibetans live in exile, most of them in India and Nepal, and of them, less than half were born in their homeland.
