Hurriyat delegation arrives in Delhi for talks (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Mirwaiz Umer Farooq-led six-member delegation of the All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) arrived here today on the invitation of Government of lndia for a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Tomorrow's meeting, which will take place ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's meeting with Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf in New York on September 14 at the UN General Assembly meet, would be the first between the Centre and APHC in the past eighteen months. Talking to the reporters Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said," The dialogue has started. We had met the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government in 2004. Then we got the opportunity to go to Pakistan and talk to the leadership in Pakistan and 'Azad' Kashmir and we are now in Delhi to talk on the matter." "As far as Kashmir is concerned, we want to maintain that the Kashmir issue is "not a bilateral one" (between India and Pakistan) and the people of Kashmir should be involved," Mirwaiz said. This would be the separatist group's first meeting with the Centre since Congress led United Progressive alliance came in power. The Hurriyat had been insisting on holding talks with the Prime Minister only although the Government had proposed meetings with Home Minister Shivraj Patil. "It was our demand that the talks should be held at the highest level. So we have agreed to meet the Prime Minister on the scheduled date," Farooq earlier said. Their last meeting with the Centre was held on March 27 and 28, 2004 with then Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani. Earlier, Hurriyat Chairman Farooq had welcomed Centre's invitation for peace talks saying only India, Pakistan and Kashmiris together can bring about a solution of the Kashmir issue, and it was a step in the right direction, which would pave the way for the final resolution of the vexed issue. The delegation includes executive committee members Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Bilal Gani Lone, Abdul Gani Bhat, Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari, Aga Syed Hassan and Fazl Haq Qureshi. The invitation to meet the Prime Minister was conveyed to the Hurriyat leaders by the Congress leader from Kashmir Saifuddin Soz.

Paswan demands Bihar polls be postponed (Go To Top)

New Delhi/Patna: Just a day after election dates for Bihar were announced, Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan on Sunday asked for the polls to be postponed, saying that it should be held after November 7, after the end of festivities. "We have requested the Election Commission to think again on the election dates. We want them to be shifted after November 7 as there are various festivals of Hindus and Muslims like Ramzan, Diwali and Chhat," Paswan told reporters in New Delhi. He reiterated that his party would neither support the NDA led Janata Dal (United) nor the Lalu Prasad Yadav led Rashtriya Janata Dal, in the elections. "We will not form an alliance with the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) or the RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) and will alone fight the elections," Paswan added. The Election Commission had on Saturday announced that the polls would be held in four phases beginning from October 18. The main fight in Bihar is expected to be between the NDA led by the Janata Dal (United) partnering with the BJP, and the UPA consisting of the RJD, Congress and the CPI. Earlier, during the May elections, neither formation could gain a clear majority in the 243 member legislative assembly, resulting in the impostion of President's Rule in the state. Meanwhile, senior CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury, said they were ready to join in with all the secular forces for the elections. "We will first try and seek the maximum possible unity of the secular forces so that any division in the secular vote will not help the consolidation of the communal combination. We recognise that the RJD is the major secular force in the state. So, on that basis we will work out our tactics and that will depend on how the other secular force also respond," Yechury told reporters in New Delhi. Meanwhile, hundreds of nomination seekers of Rashtriya Janata Dal queued up outside party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav's house in Patna. "We have come to our party supremo to ask for party tickets, which is our right, as we have been working for the party with full devotion and commitment," said Chandrajeet Prasad, a RJD party worker.

Bar Council condemns entry of foreign lawyers in India (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Bar Council of India (BCI) has condemned the possible "imminent" entry of foreign lawyers in India as it would not be in the interest of Indian lawyers. Reacting to reports that said foreign lawyers and law firms might soon start practising in the country, BCI on its resolution said, "The council reiterates its views on the issue of not permitting foreign lawyers and law firms in the country. The Bar Council of India once again strongly opposes the entry of foreign lawyers." BCI President Jaganath Patnaik also opposed the possibility saying allowing foreign lawyers to practise in India would not be in the interest of lawyers in general. Referring to the Advocates Act, 1961, Patnaik said that foreign lawyers were not permitted to practise in India and there was no reason to change the existing provisions on this point. Earlier, Union Minister for Law and Justice H R Bhardwaj had told the Indian lawyers that globalisation effect might present challenges through possible entry of foreign lawyers and they should be prepared for it. He had said that Indian lawyers benefit by practising in foreign countries and, on this basis, foreign lawyers should be allowed to practice in India. He had further expressed disappointment over the Bar's failure to convince lawyers to change their mindset and take up the challenge.
