Beggar elected village head in Muzaffarnagar District (Go To Top)

Purqazi (Muzaffarnagar District, UP): Fortune favours the brave and the deprived. This seems true in the case of Dharamvir, who till the recent past lived on the morsels offered by others. He has now changed his profession and become a 'gram pradhan' (village head). after contesting the local body elections in Muzaffarnagar District's Purqazi block with the help of the residents. "He is honest and would work towards the betterment of the village. We would cooperate with him in all possible ways and would also seek government's help for him." said Hari Om Tyagi , a villager. Dharamvir defeated his opponent Suraj Julahe, who belongs to the upper caste, by 58 votes. It is because of Dharamvir's efforts that his younger brother became an engineer. He is very enthusiastic about his new responsibilities and claims that now he would ask the state government to grant funds for the development of his village. "I will not stop begging even now but this time I will try to get more funds from the government for the development of the village." Dharamvir says. The villagers, who supported Dharamvir, faced the wrath of the upper caste during the run-up to the polls, but this did not prevent a beggar from making his mark.

Pak agrees Kashmiri families meetings at LoC (Go To Top)

Islamabad: Pakistan is learnt to have yielded to India's proposal of letting the divided Kashmiri families meet at regular intervals at five designated points along the Line of Control (LoC). But, while agreeing to the proposal, Islamabad reportedly urged New Delhi to "reduce troops in Kashmir, and withdraw black laws". Quoting diplomatic sources, The Nation said that the issue was discussed in the recent foreign-secretary level meeting in Islamabad, where the Pakistani authorities responded `positively' to the Indian suggestion. It was also decided at the meeting that the issue would be discussed by the relevant officials, who would finalize the designated points for meetings between the Kashmiri families. According to the paper, India had proposed in December 2004 that the divided families be allowed to meet at - Mundhar, Poonch, Suchetgarh, Uri and Tanggarh - and that such meetings should take place regularly. However, at that time, Pakistan's response to the Indian proposal was not forthcoming. The paper quoted a source as saying that though Pakistan had agreed in principle to India's proposal, however, it would see whether the places proposed by New Delhi were suitable or not. About the schedule of the technical level meeting between Islamabad and New Delhi on the Kashmiri families' meetings, the unidentified source said that it would be held "soon", and both the sides would contact each other through diplomatic channels to work out the possible dates.

Stroke by stroke she was matching her (Sharapova). By God's grace in one year's time she will be able to take care of them. He stomach's muscle pull was stopping her from serving hard, and that's why she was not in the rythm for service. But she'll be okay." Before it, Sania had made 49 unforced errors against Marion Bartoli in the third round while winning in straight sets. Sania, ranked 326 over a year ago, started this year ranked 169 and jumped to 42 before the U.S.Open.
