Ramesh Krishnan Defends
Bhupathi's Withdrawal from Davis Cup SYDNEY: Indian Davis Cup captain Ramesh Krishnan has defended doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi, who withdrew from the World Group qualifying tie against Australia due to a shoulder injury. Speaking to reporters in Adelaide on Saturday, Krishnan said that it was unfair to speculate on the severity of Bhupathi's injury without speaking to the player himself. He said this in response to comments made by Australia's doubles specialist Todd Woodbridge, who along with world number one Lleyton Hewitt beat Leander Paes and Vishaal Uppal in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, in the doubles match earlier in the day. The win gave Australia, who were Davis Cup runners-up last year, a place in next year's 16-team World Group after they took an unassailable 3-0 over India. "I know he (Bhupathi) is playing in Hong Kong next week, it starts Monday. If he can play the tournament next week he can play this weekend," Woodbridge told reporters. Dalmiya
Re-elected BCCI President (Go
To Top) KOLKATA: Jagmohan Dalmiya was re-elected unopposed as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday. This is for the second time the former International Cricket Council (ICC) president has been elected for the top post. SK Nair became the board's new secretary defeating Niranjan Shah by 18 votes to 12. "It is an opportunity as well as a challenge for me and I will see that I work hard to the best of my ability for the progress of cricket and also for the progress of the board," Nair told reporters soon after his election. Kishore Rungta also succeeded in retaining treasurership at the board's 73rd annual general meeting while Jyoti Bajpai was elected unopposed for the post of joint secretary. Dalmiya denied that the annual elections bred mistrust and rivalry among board members. "Once, the elections are over, we leave them behind us. Today, after my election results, I said that Niranjan ran a good war and election is a part of democracy. You can't avoid it," said Dalmiya, a Kolkata businessman, who has also served as board secretary in the past. Nair said the main agenda for the board would be to tackle the ICC contract row, which had threatened to wreck the Champions Trophy currently taking place in Sri Lanka. The issue is expected to flare up again before next year's World Cup in South Africa. India's leading cricketers had initially refused to sign the playing contracts for the Colombo tournament, but agreed at the eleventh hour after the ICC watered down certain clauses. Another problem for the BCCI is finding a new sponsor for the Indian team after Sahara India, owners of India's third-largest airline, pulled out last week. Dalmiya, however, said that the Sahara sponsorship issue was not a problem for them as the board did not have an existing contract with the group."Sahara was not directly appointed by us. We have got a contract with the IMC which is a branch of IMG, International Marketing Group and their contract is with us. They in turn had given to Sahara. We are also reading in the newspapers and we are seeing in the channels that Sahara has withdrawn and we know this fact, but we are waiting for IMC to react. If they say that they will give some alternative name, we have got nothing to say. They can come back and say that no, they are not interested or they are not finding a sponsor, the Board will go ahead and do something," Dalmiya said. The ICC had barred the Indian team from sporting the Sahara logo in the Champions Trophy after it was seen to be in conflict with South African Airways, one of the main sponsors of the 12-nation event.
