Srinagar-Jammu highway opens for traffic

The Jammu-Srinagar Highway has opened after remaining closed for almost a fortnight due to heavy snowfall.

Srinagar: The lifeline of the Kashmir valley, Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was opened for traffic after remaining unworthy for traffic movements for more than two weeks due to heavy snowfall, landslides and avalanches. According to the traffic police officials, vehicles carrying passengers and trucks carrying essential commodities were allowed to move as the Valley was witnessing acute shortage of petrol, diesel and other eatables. The traffic was allowed to leave for Jammu today morning. However, all the vehicles had to cross the 2.4 km long Jawahar tunnel before 1 PM. Small vehicles were not allowed to ply on the Highway because some portion of the road was still damaged. The 300 km long Highway, which is the vital link of the Kashmir valley with rest of the country, was reopened on March 1 but at that time no traffic was allowed to ply on the road. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working round the clock to make the Highway open for two-way traffic soon. Administration and Military forces are making coordinated efforts to make the road worthy enough to sustain the heavy traffic again.
