August 12, 2010 | New Jersey school district faces flak for adding Muslim, Hindu holidays |
Washington: Students in a central New Jersey school district will have three more days off this year. Two Islamic holidays and a Hindu observation are marked on the South
Brunswick School District 's 2010-11 school-year calendar. The New Jersey school
district will be shut down for Eid-ul-Fitr, the end of Ramazan (September 10),
Eid-ul-Adha, the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice (November 16) and the Hindu new year,
Diwali (November 5). School board president Matthew Speesler said it was time,
and added that some parents were upset, feeling there were too many holidays already
on the school calendar. The New Jersey School Boards Association says 10 of the
state's nearly 600 districts recognize Muslim holy days as official school holidays,
