Topless Queen T-shirt, selling ten an hour, courts controversy

London: A fashion firm has sparked outrage after selling a t-shirt which shows a topless image of the Queen carrying the slogan “Loverly Jubilees”. The garment costs 17.99 pounds and its makers are selling ten an hour since launching it last week. But the top has been branded “disgusting” by fans of Her Majesty, who claim it is a cheap gimmick to cash in on her Diamond Jubilee. Margaret Tyler, 68 — an ardent collector of Royal memorabilia — described it as “worse than the Sex Pistols.” “It’s ridiculous, just awful. How tatty is that? It’s terrible, especially from a British firm,” the Sun quoted her as saying. “I think it’s worse than the God Save the Queen image in a way, or certainly on a par with it for awfulness. “We’re decent ordinary people who admire the Queen — we won’t buy these disrespectful shirts,” she said. But Dave Zatchij, of West Country online retailer Shot Dead in the Head who is selling the top, said it is meant as a joke. “We do like to shock — it’s quite close to the line I think, but in a good way,” he said. “I came up with the idea when I saw the word ‘jubilee’ and thought it looked like ‘jubblies’, which we all know is slang for boobs. “I think it’s just a bit of fun, rather than it being properly offensive,” he said.
