Lahore: Sikh devotees from across the world, who assembled
at Gurudwara Shaheed Asthan, inside Gurudwara Dera Sahib here observed the Shaheedi
Diwas of the fifth Sikh guru, Guru Arjun Dev. American Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee
(AGPC) Coordinator Pritpal Singh said they have collectively requested the Akal
Takht to implement the original Nanakshahi Calendar-2003 by following the due
process. “According to the original Nanakshahi Calendar 2003, today, we have assembled
at Gurudwara Dera Sahib to celebrate Shaheedi Diwas of the fifth Sikh guru, Guru
Arjun Dev. We celebrate this day as a martyrs day for those who have sacrificed
their lives against,” Singh said. A large number of devotees gathered for the
procession to pay their obeisance to Guru Granth Sahib. The arrangements were
made by Pakistan Sikh Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC). Devotees believed
that Guru Arjun Dev's sacrifice taught many meaningful motives to the Sikh community.
“On this very day the fifth Sikh guru, Guru Arjun Dev scarified his life and became
the source of inspiration for Sikh community. Through his martyrdom he gave meaning
and motive to the life of Sikhs. He taught us to live without expectations or
seeking the result and maintaining faith in God," Amarinder Singh, a devotee,
said. It was on this day in 1606 that Guru Arjun Dev attained martyrdom after
his arrest and torture at the hands of the then Mughal rulers.
