August 16, 2012 | Preparations on for Eid |
Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh): Ahead of the sighting of the crescent moon of Eid-ul-fitr that marks the
conclusion of holy month of Ramadan
and fasting, devout Muslims here have begun preparations for the festival in right
earnest. The local markets are teeming with shoppers jostling for various items
to celebrate Eid, while the shops are flooded with traditional Vermicelli, a must
for the occasion. A shopkeeper, Nayeem Ahmed said that although the demand of
Vermicelli has been encouraging, frequent power cuts and sudden downpour have
adversely affected its production. “This time we have been facing few problems
because of rains and power cuts. We face losses as food gets wet in rains. We
sell our Vermicelli to Dehradun, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi , and Haryana.
I am not able to fulfill the demands of buyers this time because of the weather
and power cuts," Ahmed said. The festival also calls for shopping, causing a spurt
in sales across the apparel markets. “Our business is going on. Customers are
buying a wide range and good variety of suits. There are kurta pyajamas, jeans
and shirts etc. Three days are left for Eid, as such the sales are picking up,”
said Avneet Agarwal, a shopkeeper. Eid is expected to be observed within the next
two to three days, based on the sighting of moon.
