Ming dynasty ceramic fetches $1.3 m in auction

London:A ceramic from the Ming period, which was being used as a doorstop by a family in New York, was sold off at an auctioned for 1.3 million dollars. The rare blue and white moonflask (Bianhu) from the Ming dynasty, Yongle period, belonged to a family in Long Island, New York, and had been kept on a wooden stand and used as a doorstop at their home, the Telegraph reported. The owners came to know of its value only when they saw a similar piece of ceramic on a Sotheby’s advertisement. Sotheby’s described the ceramic, measuring 6 x 10 inches, as “one outstanding lot” and put an estimated sale price on the lot in the range of 600,000 – 900,000 dollars. It was sold in the second session of the three-part, two-day sale, titled ‘Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art’ held on the 11th and 12th of September.
