NEW DELHI: While the Indian handlooms are known for their unique creativity and textures, the weavers constitute a significant sector that sustains the country's
economy. In today's campaign against environmental degradation, handlooms as an eco-friendly alternative to factory products is capturing the attention from all corners. The market focus is shifting to ethical products. The youth are nowadays tweaking their lifestyle and fashion sensibilities in favour of the native handlooms.
In order to promote and popularize handlooms and handicrafts, the Government has declared August 7 National Handloom Day. To spread awareness about the
handlooms, A Handloom Utsav is being organised from October 16. The crafts fair is being held at the Handloom Haat at Handloom Marketing Complex, Janpath, New
Delhi, till October 18.
The Department of Fabric and Apparel Science, Lady Irwin College, Delhi University, is organising the utsav in collaboration with the the Development Commissioner of
Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles.
Artisans from all over India will showcase their exquisite products. Different types of
handlooms like Kani loom, Jaquard loom and backstrap loom could be seen in live demonstration.
There will also be fashion show competition, rangoli making, T-shirt painting, slogan writing, mehndi making, newspaper dresses and such other creative activities. |
