PARIS: His trademark was his ponytail and the dark sunglasses, white-collared
shirt and black tie. Karl Lagerfeld had the top brass among celebrities as his
clients. They included Diana, Nicole Kidman and Madonna. The fashion guru had
once called Nicole Kidman "absolutely divine." The Paris-based German fashion
designer who set the benchmark for Chanel's new wear as director passed away
on Tuesday, aged 85 or more.
Nicknamed 'Kaiser Karl,' the haute couturier revolutionised Chanel, which
he joined in 1983, with his modern ready-to- wear lines. The legend never felt
restrained when it came to open criticism of people at the top, like the one
on Michelle Obama. His description of singer Adele as "a little too fat" had
raised a furore.
Lagerfeld was also the womenswear director for Italian design house Fendi.
He had an eponymous 'Karl Lagerfeld' brand too.
“A prolific creative mind with endless imagination, Karl Lagerfeld explored
many artistic horizons, including photography and short films,” Chanel, 110-year
old design house, said on his passing away.
"Today the world lost a creative genius. We will miss you Karl!" tweeted Melania
Trump, the First Lady of the United States.
"Today, the world has lost an icon and a genius,” Ms. Donatella Versace said.
For Lagerfeld, "Embrace the present and invent the future" defined "Karlism".
Elegance was an "attitude" for the fashion genius.
