Paleontologist Dr Alan Grant of Jurassic Park, actor Sam Neill dies in Sydney at 78

SYDNEY (Australia), Jul 13: Renowned New Zealand actor Sam Neill, celebrated worldwide for his role as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, died on Monday in Sydney, Australia, at the age of 78.

The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia. Although he was a cancer patient, he was cured of it. But the treatment compromised his immunity and later died of pneumonia.

The legendary actor's remarkable career spanned more than five decades. He was associated with over 150 film and television projects. He was versatile—romantic leads, as heroes and chilling villains.

His breakout role in the New Zealand political thriller, Sleeping Dogs (1977), propelled him to fame and helped establish the country's national film industry while 'My Brilliant Career' (1979), an acclaimed Australian period drama, gained him international attention. 'The Omen III: The Final Conflict' (1981) marked his transition into Hollywood, where he played the Antichrist, Damien.

His major films also included: The Hunt for Red October (1990): Played the second-in-command of a Soviet submarine alongside Sean Connery; The Piano (1993): Starred in Jane Campion's Oscar-winning historical drama; Jurassic Park (1993): Delivered his most iconic, career-defining performance as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant. He later reprised this role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022); Excelled in cult psychological thrillers and sci-fi films like Dead Calm (1989) and Event Horizon (1997); Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016): independent breakout hit.

He earned three Golden Globe nominations and two Primetime Emmy Awards nods. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1991.

Personal life

End of life, Sam Neill was in Sydney because he was being treated for a severe case of pneumonia at St Vincent's Private Hospital, where he tragically passed away.

Sydney had a place in both his personal life and medical care. His family and loved ones are based across both New Zealand and Australia.

Though he was born in Northern Ireland and his career eventually took him to Hollywood, Neill always considered New Zealand his true home as his father after retirement from the British army returned to his homeland, New Zealand.

Because there were several boys named Nigel at his school in New Zealand, he chose to go by "Sam" at age 11.
