Allahabad celebrates Holi with 'Hammer procession'

Allahabad:Although 'Holi', the festival of colours, is celebrated with dance and spraying colours on each other across India, but many people in Allahabad celebrate it in their unique manner. On the day of Holi, local residents take out a hammer procession in which the hammer is adorned like a groom along with a fan as its bride. All the traditional rituals of a Hindu marriage are performed to wed this hammer and the fan on this occasion. The procession heralds the beginning of Holi festivities. "It is very symbolic. The procession marks the beginning of Holi festivities and everywhere there is fun and frolic," said Chandra Prakash, a reveller. This procession also witnesses the breaking of a pumpkin that is filled with colours, which is then splashed over the revellers. Holi festival also holds a mythological importance that of the triumph of virtue over vice. Holi festival will be celebrated in India on March 1.
