April 2, 2010 | Devout Christians observe Good Friday |
New Delhi:Christians across the country observed Good Friday today by partaking in the morning mass in churches. The day marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on this day over 2,000
years ago. In Mumbai, devotees came out in the street in large numbers and took
part in the procession. Scenes from the Ben Hur and The Passion of the Christ
were also enacted, depicting the sufferings and pain endured by Jesus Christ while
he carried his cross on his shoulders. "Today, we celebrate this Good Friday.
It is the day when Jesus died for us and we are here today walking the way of
the cross as a witness to Jesus and as a family...we come here together to show
our solidarity in the suffering and pain of Jesus," said Father Julius D'souza,
a Christian priest. In Kolkata, special mass prayers were held in churches. Passionate
Christian devotees carry small and huge wooden cross making their way to Mount
Malayatoor near Kochi. This is done to show their love for Jesus Christ and also
to feel the same pain that Jesus had endured during his crucifixion. "We are doing
this as all of us had made a vow to take a heavy cross on this day. We are a group
of seven men and started the journey from our church near Kunnumkullam. We will
only return after installing it (cross) at the hill top shrine," said Davis K,
a Christian devotee. In Mizoram, Good Friday is observed with religious fervour
by majority population of the Christians in the entire state today. |
