Foliage penetration radar to track Maoists -

New Delhi: To be one step ahead in fight against the Maoists in jungle warfare, Defence Minister AK Antony today said that India's premier research and development organisation, DRDO, is developing a whole set of technologies and weapons system to help the security forces in the low intensity conflict zone. Defence Research and Development Organisation is providing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), micro air vehicles (MAVs), ground penetration radars, foliage penetration radars and other weapons to the paramilitary forces and the state police forces to fight against the Maoists and other extremists. "Development of Foliage Penetration Radar is being taken up by DRDO for all Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications," Antony said. Antony also said that the Armed Forces will not be used for anti-naxal operation or tracking Maoist hideouts. The ground penetration radars will help in locating the IEDs (improvised explosive devices) used by the naxalites and the foliage penetration radar will track the movement of vehicles and people moving around in jungles easily.
