Flash flood throws life out of gear in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh
Udham Singh Nagar/Bahraich: Incessant rain has caused flash floods in Uttar Pradesh's Bahriach district, crippling normal life. Waters of the swollen river Ghaghra have entered residential areas, while houses in nearby villages have collapsed due to the force of the water. Villagers complained that they are receiving no help from the government, and are given food only once. "The water is here since the time rains have started. Two-three days in between we have been provided food and no help has been given apart from that so far," said Rameshwar, a local. The flood situation is also grim in Uttarakhand's Udham Singh Nagar district. "Farmers' lands are destroyed and the water is in every house. People are facing huge problems and in some areas, roads are also destroyed," said Ramesh Singh.
In Delhi, the water level in Yamuna was rising further on Saturday, touching 205.8 metres, way above the danger level mark of 204.8 meters. The volume of water is likely to increase further following the release of an additional 80,000 cusecs of water from the Hathnikund Barrage. Earlier, 269,000 cusecs had already been released into the river.
Residents who have been evacuated complained about not having received any help from the authorities. "They have released more water, because of which more problems are getting created here. Slum dwellers nearby have nothing to eat. Nobody is getting any help or support. No relief has been provided, and the government, has only set up tents and nothing else," claimed Ramraj, a resident. The situation can take a turn for the worse as rains and thundershowers have been predicted. On August 23, Delhi recorded a total of 617 mm of rainfall during the monsoon season so far, much higher than in the same period of previous years.
