Doordarshan apologizes to Malawi for derogatory remarks, says it's not deliberate
New Delhi:India's public broadcaster, Doordarshan, has tendered an unconditional apology for derogatory remarks made by its commentator during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on October 3. Malawi expressed dismay over introduction of southeast African nation as one of the least developed nation by DD commentator. Malawi's High Commissioner Mughogho protested against derogatory comments in a letter to DD's Director-General Aruna Sharma. Dr Sharma wrote a letter to High Commissioner of Malawi in India, Chrissie Chawanje Mughogo, in which she clarified that comments were never made deliberately by the commentator. Dr Sharma wrote: "Allow me to tender an unconditional apology for the remarks made on Malawi during the opening ceremony on DD sports channel." "I have checked with my team and let me assure you that these comments were never made deliberately, our commentator while describing history, culture, population and other information about Malawi, taken from the data published in the newspaper spoke that stated 'It as the world's least developed country'" the letter further stated. Dr Sharma has also instructed her team to be careful while giving any information about the Commonwealth nations.
