Phantom movie banned in Pakistan
NEW DELHI: The Lahore High Court has banned Phantom, a Bollywood movie on 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks and also about global terrorism, from releasing in theatres in Pakistan. The court order was upon a petition filed by Jama'at-ud-Da'wah (JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, the alleged mastermind of the terror strike. He argued that the Indian movie contains "filthy propaganda" against him.

"If a movie is banned in cinemas what the Government could do to stop it from being available in the market in CDs", the Lahore High Court judge, Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, asked while issuing the order. The August 8 petition charged that "there is a direct threat" to the life of Saeed if the movie is screened.

The screening of Saif Ali Khan's Agent Vinod and Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger had also been banned although they are availbale in CDs.

The Pakistan Government allows Indian films to be shown in Pak theatres provided they are cleared of any anti-Pak contents by the Pak Censor Board. The question of clearance comes only after a film is released in home theatres. Phantom has not yet been released in India yet.

The counter-terrorism thriller will hit the Indian theatres as also across the globe on August 28.

Phantom is directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Siddharth Roy Kapur, starring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif in lead roles. Katrina Kaif plays the role of a Parsi Indian girl named Nawaz Mistry. Saif Ali Khan and Katrina had to learn a little bit of Arabic. The script is an adaptation of Hussain Zaidi's book 'Mumbai Avengers'.

The Phantom has been shot in Beirut, Gulmarg, Mumbai, Punjab, London and Vancouver. Saeed and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, another brain behind the massacre, are named Harif Saeed and Sabauddin Umvi in the film.

Phantom is also the name of a 2013 Hollywood movie thriller involving a Soviet submarine's haunted captain's (Harris) secret mission enacted in the 1960s, starring Ed Harris (Demi), David Duchovny (Bruni) and William Fichtner (Alex), turning out spooky.

Another 1996 Hollywood Phantom stars Billy Zane, Treat Williams, Kristy Swanson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, James Remar and Patrick McGoohan. The plot is based on the comic strip Phantom stories. Billy Zane plays a crime fighter.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Pak ban, Kabir Khan, the director of Phantom 2015, and Saif Ali Khan, its lead actor, have said that their movie Phantom is not against Pakistan but against terrorism..

Saif Ali Khan told newsmen, “I was not surprised when Hafiz Saeed demanded a ban on Phantom. A movie of this kind was bound to be banned in Pakistan.” He said, “Three Indian Muslims are associated with this movie, Sajid Nadiadwala, I and Kabir Khan.”
