14 Indians among 717 Haj pilgrims killed in Mecca stampede
NEW DELHI: Fourteen Indians were reported to be among the over 700 Haj pilgrims killed in a stampede at Mecca (Makkah) in Saudi Arabia on Thursday. Details about their identities were awaited, according to information reaching the Haj Committee of India, Mumbai.

"Our Consul General Jeddah reports loss of 14 Indian lives in stampede. We have 13 injured in hospital", foreign minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted. The final number would be only known after confirmation with Saudi authorities, she added.

A woman from Telangana was killed, according to the Telangana State Haj Committee in Hyderabad. She has been identified as Bibi Jaan (60) from Ranga Reddy district near Hyderabad. She died in a hospital in Mina. She had gone on Haj with her husband. One Mohammed from Thrissur district in Kerala was also reportedly killed. Maqbool Alam (64), resident of Doomri in Ballia in UP, also died, according to his relatives. A news agency reported a woman from Kerala was among the dead. Sources in Kerala Government said an Indian from Lakshadweep was among the injured or dead, while reports from Assam said two Assamese were injured.

"We will provide all help to Indian nationals. Two of our officials have reached the site of accident. We are in constant touch with them," External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has said.

Over 20 lakh pilgrims who have gathered at Mecca from around the world to perform the Hajj this year includes more than 1.5 lakh Indians.
